the automatic document feeder on my canon jams on every single page, it just crumples them up inside

DIAGNOSIS The ADF pickup or separation rollers are worn out or glazed with paper dust, losing their grip and causing misfeeds.

FIX Clean the ADF rollers with isopropyl alcohol.

  • Open the document feeder cover. You'll see a set of white rubber rollers.
  • Dampen a lint-free cloth with a little isopropyl alcohol (90%+).
  • Manually rotate the rollers by hand while wiping their surface to remove all shine and dust buildup.
  • Let dry completely for 2 minutes before testing with a standard sheet of plain paper.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The rollers are beyond cleaning and need replacement. The pickup roller assembly (Canon part RM2-7550-000) is a user-replaceable part you can order and install yourself.

HEADS UP The ADF is designed for standard 20-24 lb. paper. Heavier cardstock, already-crumpled sheets, or paper with staples/paperclips will cause immediate jams and damage the rollers.
