Diagnosis
The Emerson Sensi Lite ST26 is designed to operate without a C-wire (common wire) by "power stealing" from the heating or cooling circuits. When the schedule disappears or resets, it is almost always a symptom of insufficient voltage reaching the internal non-volatile memory. If the voltage drops below a critical threshold during a cycle change, the device undergoes a brownout, which clears the temporary cache and can corrupt the stored schedule settings in the firmware. This typically happens in systems with high-resistance wiring or older 24VAC transformers that cannot handle the combined load of the thermostat and the HVAC contactors. You can confirm this by observing the screen during a system start-up; if the display flickers or dims momentarily when the heat or AC kicks in, the power draw is causing a voltage dip that triggers the reset. Additionally, if you are using a battery-only setup without a C-wire, degraded alkaline batteries can cause the device to lose its "keep-alive" voltage during peak power draws.
How to Fix It
To permanently stabilize the schedule, you must ensure a constant, unwavering 24V power supply to the unit. Follow these steps to secure the connection:
- Shut off the power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker to prevent blowing a 3-amp or 5-amp fuse on the control board.
- Remove the Sensi Lite from its wall plate and inspect the wiring. If you have a spare wire in your bundle (usually blue or black), identify it as the C-wire.
- At the furnace/air handler control board, locate the terminal strip. Ensure the C-wire is stripped to exactly 3/8 of an inch and inserted firmly into the 'C' terminal. Tighten the screw until the wire cannot be pulled out by hand.
- At the thermostat wall plate, insert that same wire into the 'C' terminal. If you are using the "power stealing" method (no C-wire), replace your current batteries with high-quality Lithium AA batteries, as they maintain a more consistent voltage curve than alkaline.
- Power the system back on. Access the Sensi app, navigate to the 'Schedule' tab, and re-input your time blocks.
- Wait 24 hours and check the 'Current Period' on the home screen to verify the thermostat is transitioning between 'Wake', 'Leave', 'Return', and 'Sleep' as programmed.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Factory Reset: Press and hold the reset button on the side of the unit for 10 seconds. This clears the corrupted flash memory that may be preventing new schedules from saving. You will need to re-pair the device to your Wi-Fi network after this process.
- Install a 24V C-Wire Adapter: If your home lacks a C-wire and you cannot run a new cable, install a C-wire transformer kit (such as the Emerson C-Wire Add-a-Wire). This bypasses the power-stealing circuit and provides a dedicated return path for electricity, eliminating the voltage dips.
- Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure the Sensi app is updated to the latest version. If the device is on an outdated firmware version, it may have a known bug regarding schedule synchronization between the cloud server and the local hardware.
- Inspect the HVAC Transformer: Use a multimeter to test the voltage between R and C at the thermostat. It should read between 24V and 28V AC. If it reads below 22V, your transformer is failing or undersized, which will continue to wipe your settings.
Heads Up
- Avoid using rechargeable batteries in the Sensi Lite; they typically output 1.2V instead of 1.5V, which is insufficient to maintain the memory during power-stealing cycles.
- Ensure the thermostat is seated perfectly flush against the wall plate. A loose connection on the 'R' terminal can cause intermittent power loss that mimics a software glitch.
- If you have a heat pump system, ensure you have the correct 'O/B' jumper settings, as incorrect polarity can occasionally cause erratic power draws that affect the logic board.
- Keep the thermostat away from direct sunlight or heat vents, as overheating the internal processor can lead to spontaneous reboots and loss of temporary settings.
