The fact that the physical buttons on the LG SP7Y chassis function correctly confirms that the soundbar's internal logic and power supply are operational. The failure is isolated to the communication link between the remote and the IR (Infrared) receiver. This is typically caused by a breakdown in the IR signal chain: either the remote is not emitting a signal due to power failure or component degradation, or the signal is being blocked or interfered with before it reaches the soundbar's sensor. To confirm if the remote is actually "dead" or if the soundbar's receiver is malfunctioning, you need to verify the IR emission. Since infrared light is invisible to the human eye, you cannot tell if the remote is working just by pressing buttons. If the batteries are fresh and the line-of-sight is clear, the issue could be a "stuck" button causing a constant signal jam or a failure in the remote's internal PCB contacts due to oxidation or liquid ingress.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to restore remote functionality:
- Remove the battery cover on the back of the remote and extract the existing CR2025 coin cell batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries; replace both simultaneously.
- Clean the battery contact terminals using a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to remove any oxidation or oils that may be preventing a solid electrical connection.
- Insert two fresh CR2025 3V lithium batteries. Ensure the positive (+) side is facing upward and the batteries are seated firmly in the spring clips.
- Clear the area in front of the soundbar. Remove any sound-absorbing fabrics, decorative items, or electronics (like a cable box or DVR) that may be sitting in front of the LG logo on the soundbar, as this is where the IR receiver is located.
- Stand approximately 1 meter (3 feet) directly in front of the bar and press the Power button. If it doesn't respond, try the "Volume +" button, as this is a simpler signal that often triggers more reliably during testing.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform the Smartphone Camera Test: Open the camera app on your smartphone. Point the front of the remote directly at the camera lens and press any button. Look at your phone screen; if the remote is working, you will see a flickering purple or white light emanating from the IR LED. If no light appears, the remote's hardware is faulty and requires replacement.
- Check for IR Interference: Some high-intensity LED light strips or fluorescent lamps can flood the IR receiver with "noise," making the soundbar unable to distinguish the remote's signal. Turn off all ambient decorative lighting in the room and attempt to operate the remote again.
- Reset the Soundbar Power Cycle: Unplug the SP7Y from the wall outlet entirely. Wait exactly 60 seconds to allow the capacitors to discharge fully. While unplugged, press and hold the physical power button on the bar for 5 seconds. Plug the unit back in and attempt to use the remote.
- Inspect for Stuck Buttons: Run your finger firmly over every button on the remote to ensure none are physically depressed or "sticky." A single stuck button can send a continuous signal that "jams" the receiver, preventing any other commands from being processed.

- Avoid using generic "heavy duty" coin cells; stick to name-brand lithium CR2025s to ensure the voltage remains stable enough to trigger the IR LED.
- The IR sensor on the SP7Y is highly directional. If the soundbar is tucked deep into a shelf or behind a TV bezel, you will experience significant "dead zones" where the remote will not work.
- Never spray cleaning agents directly into the remote's crevices, as this can corrode the conductive rubber pads under the buttons.
- If you replace the remote, ensure you purchase the exact model compatible with the SP7Y series, as LG uses different IR codes for their soundbars versus their televisions.
