Diagnosis
The LG S95QR utilizes a capacitive touch interface on the top panel rather than physical tactile switches. When the remote functions perfectly but the on-unit controls are unresponsive, the issue is typically caused by a firmware "hang" in the secondary microcontroller that manages the touch-sensor array. This is a common occurrence if the unit experiences a minor power surge or if it has been in a deep standby mode for an extended period, causing the sensor calibration to drift. In some cases, the issue is caused by a software-level "Child Lock" or "Panel Lock" feature that disables the physical interface to prevent accidental setting changes. You can confirm this is a software or sensor issue rather than a hardware failure by observing the LED display on the front of the soundbar; if the display reacts to the remote but ignores a finger press on the top panel, the touch-sensing layer is either locked or the driver has crashed.
How to Fix It
To resolve a frozen touch interface or a driver hang, you must perform a hard power cycle and a control-board reset. Follow these steps exactly:
- Power down the soundbar using the remote and then physically unplug the power cable from the AC outlet on the rear of the unit.
- Wait a full 60 seconds. This allows the capacitors on the internal control board to discharge completely, clearing the temporary memory of the touch-sensor controller.
- Plug the power cable back in firmly. Do not power the unit on via the remote yet.
- Immediately press and hold the Volume (-) button on the top touch panel for exactly 10 to 15 seconds. Even if the unit seems unresponsive, continue holding. This forces a hardware-level reboot of the interface module.
- Release the button and wait for the "Welcome" message or the standby light to stabilize.
- Test the Volume (+) and (-) buttons on the top panel to verify responsiveness.
If That Didn't Work
If the hard reset does not restore functionality, try these alternative solutions:
- Disable Panel Lock: On the LG Magic Remote, press and hold the MUTE button for 5 to 10 seconds. On certain firmware versions of the S95QR, this toggles the "Child Lock" feature. Look for a "Lock" or "Unlock" icon to briefly flash on the front LED display.
- Clear Surface Interference: Capacitive sensors are sensitive to electrical interference and debris. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol to clean the top panel. Ensure there are no decorative items, plastic covers, or dust buildup sitting on the top of the soundbar, as these can create a "ghost touch" that prevents the system from registering new inputs.
- Perform a Factory Reset: If the touch panel is disabled due to a corrupt user setting, perform a full reset. While the unit is powered on, press and hold the Volume (-) and Volume (+) buttons on the remote simultaneously for 5 seconds, or use the "Reset" sequence in the LG Soundbar app. This will wipe all EQ settings and return the unit to factory defaults.
- Firmware Update via USB: A known bug in early S95QR firmware caused the touch panel to become intermittently unresponsive. Download the latest firmware from the LG support site onto a FAT32 formatted USB drive, insert it into the SERVICE port on the back, and power cycle the unit to force an update.
Heads Up
- Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or ammonia-based sprays on the top panel, as these can degrade the capacitive coating and lead to permanent dead zones.
- If you use a third-party surge protector, ensure it is rated for high-wattage home theater equipment; under-powered strips can cause voltage drops that trigger the control panel to hang.
- Keep the soundbar at least 2 inches away from the underside of a shelf or cabinet; extreme proximity to metal surfaces can interfere with the capacitive sensing of the top buttons.
- Always ensure the power cable is pushed fully into the chassis; a loose connection can cause erratic behavior in the logic board while still providing enough power for the LEDs to light up.
