The flashing "Clean" indicator on the NEWBULIG Countertop Ice Maker is a programmed maintenance lockout. This occurs when the internal timer reaches a specific threshold of operation hours (typically after 24 to 48 hours of active ice production). The machine is designed to prevent mineral buildup—specifically calcium and magnesium deposits—from clogging the small evaporator pins and the water pump, which would eventually lead to smaller ice cubes or a complete failure to freeze. When this light flashes, the control board disables the "Make Ice" function to force a descaling process. You can confirm this is the issue if the machine refuses to start a normal cycle and the only responsive button is the Clean function. If you attempt to simply unplug the unit and plug it back in, the light will remain flashing because the maintenance trigger is stored in the non-volatile memory of the circuit board.
How to Fix It
To clear the lockout and reset the timer, you must complete a full automated cleaning cycle. Follow these precise steps:
- Empty the ice basket completely and pour out any remaining water from the reservoir to ensure no old ice contaminates the cleaning solution.
- Fill the water reservoir to the "MAX" line using a mixture of distilled water and white distilled vinegar. The optimal ratio is 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water; however, for heavy scale buildup, a 1:1 ratio is recommended.
- Plug the unit into a grounded wall outlet and power it on.
- Press and hold the "Clean" button for approximately 3 to 5 seconds. You will hear the pump engage and see the water circulating through the freezing pins.
- Allow the machine to run the full automated cycle. This typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. Do not interrupt the cycle by unplugging the machine, as this will not reset the timer.
- Once the cycle finishes, the flashing light will stop. Drain the vinegar solution and rinse the reservoir twice with fresh, clean water to remove any lingering vinegar scent.
- Press the "Make Ice" button to resume normal operation.
If That Didn't Work
- Hard Hardware Reset: If the light continues to flash after a cleaning cycle, unplug the machine from the wall for at least 30 minutes. While unplugged, hold down the power button for 10 seconds to discharge any remaining capacitors on the motherboard. Plug it back in and immediately attempt to trigger the "Clean" button again.
- Sensor Obstruction: Check the ice-full sensor (the two small infrared probes near the top of the basket area). If there is a piece of ice or a smudge of grime blocking these sensors, the machine may enter a fault state that mimics a cleaning alert. Wipe them clean with a damp microfiber cloth.
- Air Lock in Pump: If the "Clean" cycle starts but the light doesn't go away because the water isn't moving, you may have an air lock. Gently shake the machine side-to-side while the pump is running to force air bubbles out of the internal lines and allow the water to circulate.
- Vinegar Concentration: If you used a very weak solution, the internal conductivity sensors (in some high-end versions of this model) may not detect the cleaning agent. Try the cycle again using a higher concentration of white vinegar.

- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach, dish soap, or abrasive scouring pads inside the reservoir or on the freezing pins. These can corrode the aluminum plating and cause the machine to leak refrigerant.
- Use Distilled Water: To prevent the "Clean" light from appearing frequently, use distilled or filtered water instead of tap water. This significantly reduces the rate of calcium buildup.
- Weekly Rinses: Even when the light isn't flashing, it is a best practice to rinse the reservoir every 7 days to prevent biofilm and slime from forming in the stagnant water.
- Placement Matters: Ensure the unit has at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides. If the vents are blocked, the compressor will overheat, which can sometimes trigger erratic sensor behavior and false error lights.
