the automatic sharpener on my oregon saw makes a grinding noise but doesn't seem to do anything to the chain.

DIAGNOSIS The PowerSharp sharpening stone is worn out or not making proper contact with the chain. The stones are consumable and don't last forever.

FIX Replace the PowerSharp sharpening stone. Ensure it's correctly seated in the sharpener module and that the chain tension is correct—a loose chain won't engage the stone properly.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Inspect the chain itself. If the chain is excessively worn or damaged, or if it's not an Oregon PowerSharp-compatible chain, the system won't work. You must use the correct Oregon chain with the built-in guide.

HEADS UP Only run the sharpener for the recommended 3-5 seconds. Longer grinds waste the stone and can overheat the chain.
