the control box under my SHW desk gets really hot to the touch, is that normal?

— asked by Alex

Quick answer: The motor controller generates heat, but it should only be warm, not hot. Excessive heat means it's overworking.

Diagnosis

The motor controller generates heat, but it should only be warm, not hot. Excessive heat means it's overworking.

How to Fix It

Ensure the desk is on a level floor. An unlevel desk causes the motors to fight each other, overloading the controller. Use a level on the surface. Adjust the foot glides until it's perfectly level.

If That Didn't Work

Check for binding. Manually push down on each corner of the desk when it's at its highest point. If one side has more resistance, that motor is straining. This points back to a column or synchronization issue.

Heads Up

A hot control box is a fire risk long-term. If leveling doesn't fix it, unplug the desk and contact support. Do not cover the control box or pile cables on top of it.
