This occurs when the internal sensors detect an unexpected increase in resistance—such as a chair armrest, a filing cabinet, or a stray cable—preventing the motors from reaching the commanded height. To prevent motor burnout or structural damage, the system cuts power to the actuators and triggers an audible alert to notify the user. In some cases, this isn't caused by a physical object, but by a "desynchronization" of the dual-motor system. If one leg has traveled slightly further than the other due to an uneven load (e.g., a heavy PC tower on one side and a lamp on the other), the control box detects a tilt imbalance. Once the threshold for this imbalance is hit, the desk locks itself to prevent the frame from twisting or the top from warping. You can confirm this is a software lockout if the display shows an error code like "RST" or "E01" or simply flashes while beeping.
How to Fix It
To clear the lockout and reset the motor synchronization, you must perform a hard power cycle and a manual calibration sequence. Follow these exact steps:
- Clear the entire perimeter of the desk. Ensure there are no cables tensioning against the wall or objects tucked under the desktop that could interfere with the downward travel.
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet entirely. Do not simply flip a power strip switch; the control box capacitors need to discharge.
- Wait exactly 60 seconds. This ensures the volatile memory in the control box is cleared.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. You may hear a single short beep.
- Press and hold the DOWN button. The desk will not move immediately; it will likely perform a "homing" sequence where it descends slowly to its lowest possible point.
- Continue holding the DOWN button until the desk reaches the bottom limit and the display stops flashing or beeps again. This recalibrates the zero-point for both motors.
- Release the button. The desk should now respond to the UP and DOWN commands normally.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Cable Connections: Crawl under the desk and locate the control box (the black plastic hub). Unplug and re-seat the motor cables connecting the box to the legs. If a pin has loosened or a cable has shifted, the control box will beep because it cannot detect one of the motors. Ensure the connectors "click" firmly into place.
- Check for Overweight Conditions: If you have added heavy equipment recently (like a multi-monitor arm or a heavy subwoofer), you may be exceeding the 250lb weight capacity. Remove all non-essential items from the desktop and attempt the reset process again. If it works without the gear, you are overloading the motors.
- Verify the Power Supply: Ensure the desk is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a daisy-chained extension cord. Low voltage can cause the control box to trigger a false collision error because the motors cannot draw enough current to overcome the initial inertia.
- Manual Leg Alignment: If the desk is visibly tilted, carefully shift the weight of your equipment to the opposite side to balance the load, then attempt the "Hold DOWN" reset sequence again to synchronize the leg heights.

- Avoid using the desk at its absolute maximum or minimum height for extended periods; staying within the mid-range of travel reduces wear on the actuator gears.
