This is the internal temperature sensor responsible for monitoring the heat of the cooking chamber. When the control board detects a reading that is "out of range"—meaning the circuit is either completely open (broken wire) or shorted (melted insulation)—it triggers a safety lockout to prevent the heating element from running uncontrollably and causing a fire. This typically happens due to one of three reasons: excessive grease buildup that has seeped into the sensor housing, a loose connection where the sensor wires meet the main PCB (Printed Circuit Board), or a complete thermal failure of the sensor probe itself. Because the unit cannot verify if it is overheating or under-heating, it disables all functions, including the start button and temperature adjustments, rendering the machine unresponsive.
How to Fix It
Since this is often caused by a temporary electronic glitch or a surface-level short caused by debris, follow these precise steps to attempt a hard reset and cleaning:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet immediately. Do not simply turn the unit off using the button.
- Allow the unit to sit for exactly 30 to 60 minutes. This allows the capacitors on the control board to discharge fully and ensures the thermistor has returned to ambient room temperature.
- Remove the fryer basket and look up into the ceiling of the cooking chamber. Using a flashlight, inspect the area around the heating element for any hanging drips of grease or charred food debris that may be touching the sensor probe.
- Use a soft, dry nylon brush or a can of compressed air to clear any dust or residue from the heating element assembly. Do not use water or liquid cleaners inside the heating chamber.
- Ensure the unit is placed on a flat, hard surface with at least 5 inches of clearance from the wall to ensure the intake vents aren't obstructed, as overheating can sometimes trigger false E1 readings.
- Plug the unit directly into a wall outlet (avoid using extension cords or surge protectors for this test) and power it on.
If That Didn't Work
If the E1 code persists after a hard reset, the issue is likely hardware-related and requires more invasive troubleshooting:
