The De'Longhi Magnifica Evo ECAM29043SB uses a magnetic reed switch combined with an optical detection system to verify that the grounds container (dreg drawer) is properly seated. When the machine triggers the "empty grounds container" alert despite the bin being empty, it is almost always due to a failure in the "handshake" between the drawer and the internal sensors. This happens because fine coffee particulates and volatile oils build up over time, creating a film over the optical sensor or obstructing the physical alignment of the magnetic trigger. If the sensor is coated in a thin layer of coffee residue, the infrared beam cannot bounce back correctly, leading the logic board to believe the drawer is missing or full of debris. Additionally, if the drawer was slid back into place too quickly or is slightly skewed, the magnetic sensor may not engage, triggering a false positive error. You can confirm this by observing if the message disappears and reappears intermittently when you gently wiggle the drawer while it is inserted.
How to Fix It
To resolve the sensor error and clear the alert, follow these precise steps to ensure a clean signal path:
- Power down the machine using the main switch and unplug the unit from the wall to prevent any electrical surges during cleaning.
- Slide out the grounds container and the drip tray entirely.
- Locate the sensor area: look at the left-hand interior wall of the cavity where the drawer resides. You will see a small, recessed plastic window. This is the optical eye.
- Use a high-density microfiber cloth dampened with a small amount of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol (70%). Gently wipe the sensor window until it is crystal clear and free of brown residue.
- Inspect the corresponding area on the back of the grounds container. Ensure there are no stray coffee pucks or clumps of wet grounds clinging to the rear plastic wall of the bin.
- Dry both the sensor and the bin thoroughly; moisture can cause the optical beam to refract, triggering the error again.
- Slide the container back in with a firm, steady motion. Ensure it reaches the back of the cavity completely. You should feel a distinct "seat" where the drawer locks into position.
- Plug the machine back in and power it on. If the message persists, remove the drawer and re-insert it one more time while the machine is powered on to trigger the magnetic switch.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a "Hard Reset" of the sensor logic. With the machine on, remove the grounds container and the water tank. Wait exactly 30 seconds. Reinsert the water tank first, then the grounds container. This forces the machine to re-scan all peripheral components.
- Check for "Puck Sticking." Sometimes a coffee puck doesn't fall fully into the bin and remains lodged in the brew group chute. This creates a physical obstruction that prevents the drawer from seating deep enough to hit the magnetic switch. Remove the brew group (the side panel assembly) and manually clear any jammed pucks from the chute using a vacuum or a brush.
- Inspect the magnetic trigger. On some units, the small magnet embedded in the drawer can become displaced or coated in thick grime. Use a damp cloth to scrub the exterior perimeter of the drawer's rear wall to ensure the magnet is making a clean, unobstructed approach to the internal reed switch.
- Verify the drip tray alignment. If the drip tray is slightly warped or not pushed in 100%, the grounds container sitting on top of it will be tilted by a few millimeters, which is enough to miss the sensor alignment. Ensure the tray is flush against the machine chassis.

- Avoid using abrasive sponges or scouring pads on the optical sensor window, as scratches will permanently distort the infrared beam and lead to permanent "phantom" errors.
- Empty the grounds container every time you empty the water tank; allowing wet pucks to sit for days creates a humid environment that accelerates the buildup of residue on the sensors.
- When cleaning the interior cavity, never spray water or cleaning agents directly into the machine. Always apply the cleaner to the cloth first to avoid shorting the internal sensor wiring.
- Check the brew group lubrication every 500 cycles. A dry brew group can cause pucks to "tear" rather than drop, leading to the debris buildup that causes these sensor errors.
