The Blueair Blue Pure 211+ utilizes a dual-stage filtration system where the outer fabric pre-filter acts as the first line of defense. Over time, this fabric traps large particles like pet hair, lint, and heavy dust. When the fabric becomes visibly grey or clogged, it creates a pressure drop that forces the internal motor to work harder to pull air through, which can lead to premature motor wear and a noticeable decrease in the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). If you notice a whistling sound coming from the unit or if the air output feels weaker even on the highest fan setting, your pre-filter is likely saturated. While it is tempting to use a washing machine, the fabric is a synthetic blend that can shrink or lose its shape under high heat or aggressive agitation. If the pre-filter shrinks, it will no longer fit snugly around the main HEPASilent filter, creating "air gaps" where unfiltered air bypasses the system entirely, rendering the purifier ineffective.
How to Fix It
To properly clean the pre-filter without compromising the integrity of the fabric or the internal filter, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the unit and disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent any electrical issues during the cleaning process.
- Lift the plastic top grille of the Blue Pure 211+ to access the filter assembly.
- Gently pull the fabric pre-filter away from the main cylindrical filter. The pre-filter is held in place by a series of small Velcro-style fasteners; peel these back carefully to avoid tearing the fabric.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove the bulk of the surface dust and hair. This prevents the fabric from becoming a "muddy" mess when water is applied.
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water (approximately 30-40°C) and add a small amount of mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, as these can degrade the synthetic fibers.
- Submerge the fabric and gently agitate it with your hands. Do not scrub aggressively or use a stiff brush, as this can fray the weave.
- Rinse the fabric thoroughly under cool running water until all soap suds are gone.
- Lay the pre-filter flat on a clean towel to air dry. Do not wring it tightly or put it in a tumble dryer, as the heat will shrink the material.
- Once completely dry to the touch, wrap it back around the main filter and secure the fasteners firmly.
If That Didn't Work
- If the fabric remains stained or smells musty after washing, soak it for 30 minutes in a mixture of water and a tablespoon of white distilled vinegar. This neutralizes odors and breaks down stubborn oils without damaging the fabric.
- If you find the fabric has already shrunk due to a previous machine wash, do not attempt to stretch it back. Instead, purchase a replacement pre-filter sleeve. Using a shrunken filter allows unfiltered air to enter the main filter, clogging the expensive HEPASilent core much faster.
- If the vacuuming step didn't remove the "grey" look, it may be fine particulate matter embedded in the weave. In this case, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently flick the dust out of the fabric while it is dry before the wet wash.
- If the main filter inside the fabric sleeve is also visibly dirty or emitting an odor, cleaning the pre-filter will not solve the problem. You will need to replace the main filter cartridge (Part # Blueair 211+ Filter) as the internal particles cannot be washed.
Heads Up
- Never install a damp pre-filter. Moisture trapped against the main HEPASilent filter can lead to mold growth or mildew inside the filter medium, which will blow spores back into your room.
- Vacuum the pre-filter every 2-4 weeks. Regular vacuuming significantly extends the life of the main filter by preventing the fabric from becoming totally occluded.
- Avoid using fabric softeners during the wash; these leave a waxy residue on the fibers that can actually repel air and reduce the efficiency of the purifier.
- Check the fit of the pre-filter after every wash. If there are gaps larger than 1/4 inch between the fabric and the main filter, the unit's efficiency is compromised.
