The "plasticky" or chemical taste in the OLIXIS Countertop Ice Maker is typically caused by residual manufacturing lubricants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) trapped within the internal tubing and the evaporator pins. During the assembly of these portable units, food-grade oils are used to ensure the pump and cooling components move freely; if these aren't fully flushed, they leach into the water during the freezing process, concentrating the flavor in the ice cubes. Furthermore, if you have already run a cleaning cycle using a commercial descaler or heavy vinegar, the porous nature of the plastic water reservoir can absorb these scents. Because the OLIXIS uses a small, recirculating pump system, any residue clinging to the interior walls of the reservoir or the bottom of the ice basket is continuously cycled through the freezing pins, meaning the taste persists across multiple batches until the chemical bond is broken by a high-volume flush.
How to Fix It
To completely eliminate the chemical taste and reset the internal environment of the machine, follow this deep-flush protocol:
- Empty the reservoir completely and wipe the interior walls with a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth to remove any surface films.
- Fill the reservoir to the "MAX" line with a solution of 50% distilled white vinegar and 50% warm (not boiling) filtered water. Do not use concentrated chemical cleaners at this stage.
- Run the "Auto-Cleaning" cycle. If your specific model doesn't have a dedicated button, manually run 3 full freeze-and-drop cycles.
- Drain the vinegar solution entirely. Use a damp cloth to wipe the ice basket and the scoop, as these often hold onto the scent.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water and add one tablespoon of baking soda. Stir gently to dissolve. Run one full cycle of ice production. The baking soda acts as a neutralizing agent for the acidic vinegar and the alkaline plastic odors.
- Discard the baking soda ice.
- Perform a final "Pure Flush": Fill the machine with distilled water and run 4 consecutive batches of ice. Do not use any of this ice for consumption.
- Empty the machine and let it air dry for 30 minutes before filling it with your preferred drinking water for the first official use.
If That Didn't Work
- Switch to Distilled Water: Tap water contains minerals that can react with the plastic lining of the reservoir, amplifying the "plastic" taste. Using distilled water for 48 hours can help "strip" the remaining residues from the internal lines.
- Deep Clean the Gaskets: Remove the ice basket and check the rubber seals around the reservoir. If there is a pungent smell, wipe the gaskets with a mixture of lemon juice and water. Odors often cling to the rubber seals rather than the plastic itself.
- Check for External Contamination: Ensure the machine is not placed under a cabinet where it is absorbing odors from kitchen spices or cleaning chemicals. The intake vents on the OLIXIS can pull in ambient odors that settle on the cold evaporator pins.
- Replace the Water Source: If you are using a pitcher filter, ensure the filter is fresh. Old filters can release a metallic taste that mimics the "plastic" flavor when concentrated into ice cubes.

- Never use boiling water in the reservoir; this can warp the plastic housing and damage the internal pump seals, leading to leaks.
- Avoid using scented dish soaps to clean the ice basket; the fragrance will permeate the plastic and transfer directly to your ice. Use fragrance-free soap or a vinegar rinse.
- To prevent future taste issues, drain the water reservoir every 24 hours. Stagnant water in portable ice makers is the primary cause of biofilm buildup and "off" flavors.
- Always keep the lid closed when not in use to prevent airborne dust and kitchen grease from settling on the cooling pins.
