Diagnosis
This issue is caused by a mechanical failure in the 5-way directional joystick module located on the rear of the ASUS VG28UQL1A. The joystick operates on a rubberized dome switch mechanism; when the "click" or "press" action becomes stiff or unresponsive, it is typically due to one of two things: the accumulation of micro-debris (dust, skin cells, or plastic shavings) wedged between the joystick shaft and the outer plastic housing, or a misalignment of the internal centering spring causing the shaft to bind against the bezel. To confirm this is a mechanical binding issue rather than an electronic failure, try tilting the joystick slightly to the left or right before pressing inward. If the button clicks more easily when tilted, the shaft is physically rubbing against the chassis. If the joystick moves freely in all four directions but refuses to depress vertically, the internal silicone membrane has likely shifted or collapsed, preventing the tactile switch from engaging with the PCB.
How to Fix It
Since the joystick is integrated into the internal circuitry, you must attempt a non-invasive cleaning before considering a hardware replacement. Follow these steps precisely:
- Power down the monitor and unplug the power cable from the wall to prevent any short-circuits during cleaning.
- Obtain a can of high-pressure compressed air (duster) and a bottle of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA).
- Using a cotton swab lightly dampened with IPA, clean the perimeter of the joystick shaft, removing any visible grime or sticky residue that may be creating friction against the housing.
- Insert the thin straw attachment of the compressed air can into the gap between the joystick stem and the monitor casing.
- While delivering short, sharp bursts of air into the gap, rapidly wiggle the joystick in a circular motion and repeatedly attempt to press the center button. This vibrates the debris loose and pushes it out of the switch housing.
- Repeat the process for 2-3 minutes, alternating between air bursts and manual manipulation.
- Reconnect the power and test the OSD (On-Screen Display) navigation to ensure the "Select" function is restored.
If That Didn't Work
If the joystick remains stiff or unresponsive, the problem is internal to the switch assembly. Try these alternatives:
- Install ASUS DisplayWidget Center: This is the most effective workaround. Download the software from the ASUS support site. This allows you to control brightness, contrast, input sources, and GameVisual modes directly from your Windows desktop using your mouse, completely bypassing the physical joystick.
- External USB Keyboard Mapping: Some users have success using third-party monitor control software (like ControlMyMonitor) that utilizes DDC/CI protocols. This allows you to map monitor settings to keyboard shortcuts, rendering the broken physical button irrelevant.
- Internal Component Cleaning: If the monitor is out of warranty, you can carefully remove the rear casing. Locate the joystick PCB and use a precision needle to clear any plastic flashing or mold-release residue from the factory that may be obstructing the switch.
- RMA/Professional Repair: If the unit is under warranty, do not open the case. Contact ASUS for a replacement, as the joystick is a soldered-on module and cannot be replaced as a simple plug-and-play part.

- Never spray liquid cleaners, WD-40, or lubricants directly into the joystick. These can degrade the rubber membrane or cause a short circuit on the control board.
- Avoid applying excessive force when the button is stuck; the joystick is mounted to a thin PCB, and pressing too hard can crack the solder joints or snap the plastic mounting bracket.
- Keep the rear of the monitor free of dust by using a microfiber cloth weekly, as the gap around the joystick is a primary entry point for debris.
- If you use DisplayWidget Center, ensure DDC/CI is enabled in the monitor's system settings, otherwise the software will not be able to communicate with the hardware.
