Over time, the repeated torque applied to turn the burner from "Off" to "High" causes the internal gripping teeth or the set screw to loosen. When this happens, the knob no longer seats flush against the shaft, creating a "wobble" and a gap between the knob base and the stainless steel cooktop surface. You can confirm this by gently pulling the knob outward. If it slides off with zero resistance, the internal locking mechanism has failed or the set screw has backed out completely. If the knob spins without engaging the burner, the internal plastic "D" sleeve has likely stripped or cracked, meaning the knob is no longer gripping the flat side of the metal shaft. This is a common wear-and-tear issue caused by the thermal expansion and contraction of the metal shafts during heavy cooking cycles.
How to Fix It
To stabilize the knobs and ensure a tight fit, follow these precise steps:
- Turn off all burners and ensure the cooktop has cooled completely to avoid burns.
- Grip the wobbly knob and pull it straight upward and away from the range. Do not twist it while pulling, as this can strip the remaining plastic.
- Inspect the interior of the knob's stem. Locate the small set screw located on the side of the plastic collar. This is typically a 2mm or 2.5mm Hex (Allen) screw.
- If the screw is present but loose, insert the hex key and tighten it clockwise until it is snug. Do not over-tighten, as the plastic housing can crack under excessive pressure.
- If the screw is missing, replace it with a matching M3 stainless steel set screw. Thread it into the collar and tighten it firmly against the flat portion of the metal shaft.
- Align the "Off" marker on the knob with the "Off" position on the range.
- Press the knob firmly down onto the shaft. You should feel a distinct "click" or a snug fit. If the knob still feels loose, apply a small piece of Teflon tape (plumber's tape) around the metal shaft to increase the diameter and friction before sliding the knob back on.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Knob Assembly: If the internal plastic D-shape is stripped or cracked, no amount of tightening will fix the wobble. Order a genuine KitchenAid replacement knob (Part #WPW10462335 or equivalent for the KFEG500 series). Replace the damaged knob with the new unit to restore the factory grip.

- Shim Method: For a quick temporary fix, cut a tiny sliver of a plastic soda bottle or a thin rubber band and place it over the metal shaft before sliding the knob on. This creates a custom-fit shim that eliminates the wobble.
