Diagnosis
The non-stick PTFE or ceramic coating has suffered mechanical or chemical failure. This typically occurs due to "micro-scratching" from metal tongs or forks, the use of abrasive scouring pads (like steel wool), or the corrosive effect of dishwasher detergents and high-heat drying cycles, which break down the chemical bond between the coating and the metal substrate.
How to Fix It
Non-stick coatings cannot be safely "patched" or reapplied at home; any spray-on sealant is temporary and not food-safe for high-heat air frying. The only permanent solution is to replace the hardware:
- Immediately cease using the damaged basket to prevent coating flakes from contaminating your food.
- Purchase a genuine replacement basket and crisper tray (Part #AF-10BASKET) specifically designed for the 10QT Pro Plus model to ensure a proper airtight seal and fit.
- Before using the new basket, ensure it is washed with mild soap and water to remove any manufacturing residues.
If That Didn't Work
If you find your replacement parts are peeling again shortly after purchase, audit your maintenance routine:
- Switch to Silicone: Replace all metal utensils with food-grade silicone or nylon tools.
- Avoid the Dishwasher: Even if labeled "dishwasher safe," the caustic chemicals in pods strip the coating over time. Hand wash only.
- The Soak Method: Instead of scrubbing burnt-on grease, soak the basket in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes to loosen debris without abrasion.
- Temperature Control: Avoid preheating the empty basket at maximum temperature for extended periods, as extreme heat can cause the coating to blister.
Heads Up
Cooking in a peeling basket is a health risk as chemical flakes can migrate into your food. Furthermore, once the coating is gone, the exposed carbon steel or aluminum will oxidize and rust quickly, which can permanently damage the heating element of the air fryer via corrosive fumes.
