DIAGNOSIS The scanner carriage is obstructed or its rail is dry. The noise is the carriage motor straining against resistance.
FIX Unplug the printer. Open the document cover and the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). Manually move the white scanner carriage from the right side to the center of the glass. Inspect for any small objects, paper clips, or torn paper bits. Remove any debris. Apply a tiny amount of white lithium grease to the metal rail the carriage slides on.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The carriage may be misaligned. Perform a scanner reset. With the printer on, open and close the document cover five times in succession, ending in the closed position. Listen for the carriage to re-home.
HEADS UP Never force the carriage. If it does not move smoothly by hand with the power off, there is likely a mechanical failure requiring service.
