Diagnosis
The "dribbling" or spitting effect occurs because the thermocoil—the heating element responsible for steam—has not reached the critical temperature required to flash-boil water into dry steam. When you engage the steam valve prematurely, the machine pushes liquid water or a "wet steam" mixture through the wand. This is common on the BES876BSS because it uses a single-boiler system with a thermocoil that must transition from brewing temperature (approx. 200°F) to steaming temperature (approx. 250°F+).
Another primary cause is a blockage in the steam tip or the internal valve. Milk proteins can solidify inside the small holes of the 4-hole steam tip, creating backpressure that prevents the steam from flowing freely, which manifests as erratic spitting. If you see the "Steam" light flashing, the machine is still heating; if it is solid, the machine believes it is ready, but air pockets (vapor lock) in the line may still be purging before the dry steam arrives.
How to Fix It
To achieve high-pressure, dry steam, follow this exact sequence to ensure the thermocoil is fully saturated and the lines are purged:
- Press the Steam button on the control panel. The indicator light will begin to flash, signaling the heating phase.
- Wait until the flashing light turns solid. This indicates the machine has reached the target temperature.
- Before placing the wand in your milk pitcher, turn the side dial to the Steam position and let the wand "purge" for 3 to 5 seconds. This clears out any condensed water sitting in the wand assembly.
- Once you see a consistent, high-velocity jet of white steam with no visible water droplets, immediately turn the dial off and immerse the wand tip just below the surface of the milk.
- Re-engage the steam dial. Position the wand slightly off-center to create the necessary vortex (whirlpool) for microfoam.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Clean the Steam Tip: Unscrew the stainless steel steam tip from the wand arm. Use a thin sewing needle or a dedicated 0.5mm cleaning pin to poke through each of the four holes to clear dried milk solids. Soak the tip in a solution of hot water and espresso machine cleaner for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
- Perform a Descaling Cycle: Limescale buildup inside the thermocoil acts as an insulator, preventing the water from reaching the boiling point. Use a commercial descaling powder or a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution. Run the descaling process through the steam wand specifically to clear internal calcification.
- Check the Steam Valve Seal: If the machine is fully heated and the tip is clean, but it still drips, the internal O-ring on the steam valve may be worn. If you notice water leaking from the base of the dial rather than the tip, the valve requires replacement.
- Prime the Pump: If the machine has been sitting idle for several days, air may be trapped in the pump. Run the "Hot Water" function for 10 seconds to force water through the system and eliminate air pockets before attempting to steam.

- Immediate Purge: Always purge the steam wand after frothing milk. This prevents milk from being sucked back into the boiler, which is the leading cause of "spitting" and bacterial buildup.
- Water Filtration: Use the provided charcoal filters and change them every 2 months. Hard water is the primary enemy of the BES876BSS thermocoil and will lead to permanent steam pressure loss.
- Avoid "Dry Firing": Never leave the steam dial open for extended periods without water in the tank; this can overheat the thermocoil and trigger a thermal cutout.
- Wipe Immediately: Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the wand immediately after every use. Once milk proteins bake onto the steel, they become nearly impossible to remove without disassembly.
