Diagnosis
The temperature discrepancy in the ecobee Smart Thermostat Lite is typically caused by "thermal ghosting" or localized heat saturation. Because the sensor is embedded directly into the chassis, it is susceptible to heat bleeding through the wall from internal plumbing, electrical wiring, or the device's own internal circuitry. If the thermostat is mounted in a recessed wall pocket or near a drafty window, the sensor will read the temperature of the wall cavity or the air gap rather than the actual ambient room temperature. To confirm if the issue is internal or external, remove the thermostat from the wall plate and let it sit on a table next to a calibrated digital thermometer for 30 minutes. If the readings align once the device is away from the wall, the problem is "wall bleed" (heat transferring from the wall). If the ecobee still reads 3-5 degrees higher than the reference thermometer, the internal sensor is likely calibrated incorrectly or is being influenced by the device's own heat dissipation.
How to Fix It
The most effective way to resolve a skewed reading without moving the physical hardware is to apply a Temperature Offset. This forces the software to subtract or add a specific value to the sensor's reading to match your reference thermometer.
- Place a high-accuracy digital thermometer exactly 2 inches away from the ecobee Lite screen. Wait 15 minutes for the thermometer to stabilize.
- Note the exact difference. For example, if the ecobee reads 74°F but the thermometer reads 70°F, your offset is -4 degrees.
- On the ecobee Lite screen, tap the Main Menu (three horizontal lines).
- Navigate to Settings and then select Installation Settings.
- Select Thresholds and find the Temperature Correction option.
- Enter the numerical difference (e.g., -4) to align the ecobee with the actual room temperature.
- Save the settings and wait 10 minutes to ensure the system doesn't trigger a short-cycle on your HVAC unit due to the sudden change in perceived temperature.
If That Didn't Work
- Install a SmartSensor: The ecobee Lite supports remote SmartSensors. By placing a sensor in a central location away from the thermostat and configuring the system to "Follow Me" or prioritize the sensor over the main unit, you bypass the faulty wall reading entirely. This is the gold standard for rooms with poor airflow.
- Seal the Wall Hole: If you suspect air from the wall cavity (the hole where the wires come through) is blowing hot or cold air onto the sensor, use a small piece of plumbers' putty or foam insulation to seal the gap around the wires. This prevents "chimney effect" drafts from skewing the internal thermistor.
- Relocate the Device: If the thermostat is mounted in direct sunlight or directly above a heat vent, no amount of software correction will fix the volatility. Move the device to an interior wall that receives indirect light and is at least 5 feet away from any air supply vents.
- Check for "Wall Heat": If the thermostat is mounted on a wall shared with a laundry room or kitchen, heat may be transferring through the drywall. Adding a 1/4 inch plastic spacer or a mounting plate between the wall and the thermostat can create a thermal break.
Heads Up
- Avoid cleaning the screen with ammonia-based cleaners; these can degrade the plastic casing and potentially seep into the sensor vents on the side of the device.
- Ensure the C-wire is securely fastened. Intermittent power fluctuations can occasionally cause the internal processor to overheat, which artificially raises the temperature reading.
- If you use a "Thermostat Guard" or decorative cover, remove it. These covers trap heat against the sensor, often causing a 2-3 degree upward skew.
- Periodically dust the side vents of the Lite model using compressed air to ensure the sensor has a clear path to the ambient air.
