Diagnosis
The Johnson Controls GLAS Smart Thermostat utilizes a high-precision thermistor located internally. When the displayed temperature deviates significantly from independent thermometers, it is rarely a sensor failure and almost always a result of "thermal ghosting" or localized micro-climates. This occurs when the device is subjected to external heat or cold sources that do not represent the actual ambient air temperature of the room. Common culprits include "wall-cavity drafts," where air from an uninsulated exterior wall leaks through the hole where the wires enter the wall, blowing directly onto the internal sensor. Additionally, because the GLAS has a sleek, dark glass interface, it is prone to absorbing radiant heat from direct sunlight or heat soak from nearby electronics like LED televisions or gaming consoles. To confirm this, place a digital probe thermometer directly against the GLAS chassis; if the probe reads higher than the room air, you have a localized heat source issue.
How to Fix It
If the hardware is positioned correctly but the reading remains skewed, you must apply a Temperature Offset to calibrate the sensor to match your trusted reference thermometer.
- Wake the GLAS display by tapping the screen.
- Navigate to the Settings menu by tapping the gear icon in the bottom corner.
- Select Installation from the menu options.
- Locate the Temperature Calibration or Offset setting.
- Compare the GLAS reading to your reference thermometer. If the GLAS reads 75°F but your reference reads 71°F, you need a -4 degree offset.
- Adjust the numerical value up or down until the GLAS display matches the reference thermometer exactly.
- Exit the menu and wait 15 minutes for the sensor to stabilize before verifying the reading again.
- If the unit is mounted on an exterior wall, use a piece of plumbers' putty or expanding foam to seal the wire hole behind the backplate to stop drafts from affecting the sensor.
If That Didn't Work
- Relocate the Device: If the GLAS is mounted on a wall that receives direct afternoon sunlight, no amount of calibration will fix the fluctuation. Move the thermostat to an interior partition wall away from windows and heat-generating appliances.
- Check for "Heat Soak": Ensure there is at least 12 inches of clearance between the bottom of the thermostat and any heat-emitting source, such as a lamp or a radiator. If the wall itself feels warm to the touch, the thermostat is absorbing conductive heat from the building structure.
- Verify Power Stability: Ensure the C-wire is providing consistent 24VAC power. Inconsistent power delivery to the logic board can occasionally cause the processor to run hot, which leaks thermal energy into the internal sensor, causing an artificially high reading.
- Factory Reset: If the offset is applied but the temperature drifts wildly, perform a hard reset by navigating to Settings > Device Management > Factory Reset. This clears any corrupted calibration tables and forces the sensor to re-baseline.

- Avoid cleaning the glass screen with ammonia-based cleaners; use a dry microfiber cloth to prevent chemical buildup that can trap heat on the surface.
- Do not install the GLAS in a hallway with high-velocity air movement or near a bathroom door where steam can enter the chassis and cause sensor drift.
- If you use a remote sensor kit with your GLAS system, prioritize the remote sensor for "Average Temperature" settings to bypass the wall-mounted unit's inaccuracies.
- Check your wall insulation every few years; a settling house can create new air gaps behind the thermostat backplate, leading to sudden temperature reading shifts.
