The Wyze Thermostat relies on a built-in thermistor that measures the ambient air temperature immediately surrounding the device. When the display reads 72°F but the room feels freezing, you are likely experiencing "ghost heating" or "thermal leakage." This occurs when the sensor is tricked into thinking the room is warmer than it actually is, preventing the heater from kicking in. The most common culprit is air leaking from the hole in the drywall where the wires emerge from the wall; warm air from inside the wall cavity (which is often warmer than the room) blows directly onto the sensor, creating a localized heat pocket. Another frequent cause is the placement of the unit. If the thermostat is installed near a heat-generating appliance, in direct sunlight, or close to a kitchen, the sensor will register a higher temperature than the rest of the living space. To confirm this, place a digital hygrometer or a calibrated laboratory thermometer directly on top of the Wyze unit. If the external thermometer reads 68°F while the Wyze screen insists it is 72°F, you have a calibration or environmental interference issue rather than a systemic HVAC failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve a temperature discrepancy, you must first isolate the sensor from wall drafts and then apply a software offset. Follow these exact steps:
- **Seal the Wall Hole:** Remove the Wyze Thermostat faceplate from the wall base. Locate the hole where the C-wire and other HVAC wires enter the wall. Stuff a small amount of non-flammable insulation or a piece of foam putty into the hole to block airflow from the wall cavity. This prevents warm air from "tricking" the sensor.
- **Perform a Baseline Test:** Reattach the faceplate. Place a reliable digital thermometer exactly 1 inch away from the Wyze unit. Leave both in place for 60 minutes without touching the thermostat to allow the temperature to stabilize.
- **Calculate the Offset:** Subtract the Wyze reading from the digital thermometer reading. (Example: Digital reads 68°F, Wyze reads 72°F. Your offset is -4°F).
- **Apply Calibration in App:** Open the Wyze App and select your Thermostat. Tap the **Settings** (gear icon) in the top right corner.
- **Adjust Temperature Offset:** Scroll down to **Advanced Settings** and select **Temperature Calibration**. Enter the offset value (e.g., -4) to align the Wyze reading with the actual room temperature.
- **Save and Sync:** Tap **Save**. Wait 30 seconds for the device to sync via Wi-Fi; the display on the wall should now reflect the corrected temperature.
If That Didn't Work
- **Check for "Heat Soak" from the Base:** If the thermostat was recently installed, the backplate might be retaining heat from the wiring. Ensure the wires are not bundled tightly against the sensor area. Loosen the wire tension slightly to allow for better airflow around the back of the unit.
- **Relocate the Device:** If the unit is installed on a wall that receives direct afternoon sunlight or is within 5 feet of a lamp or electronic device, the sensor will never be accurate. You will need to move the thermostat to an interior wall away from heat sources.
- **Verify C-Wire Stability:** A fluctuating power supply from a faulty C-wire can occasionally cause the processor to run hot, which warms the internal sensor. Use a multimeter to verify you have a steady 24VAC at the baseplate. If voltage is dipping, the internal heat may be skewing the reading.
- **Factory Reset:** If the calibration offset doesn't "stick" or the reading jumps erratically, perform a hard reset. Press and hold the reset button on the device for 10 seconds until the screen flashes, then re-pair it to the Wyze app to clear any corrupted sensor cache.

- **Avoid Drafts:** Never install a thermostat directly opposite a front door or window, as the sudden influx of cold air will cause the heater to run indefinitely, leading to overheating in the rest of the house.
- **Dust the Vents:** Every six months, use a can of compressed air to gently blow out the small vents on the sides of the Wyze Thermostat. Dust buildup can insulate the sensor and lead to sluggish temperature readings.
- **Avoid Painting Over:** Never paint the thermostat faceplate or the area immediately surrounding it with thick insulating paint, as this can trap heat against the sensor and cause a permanent positive temperature bias.
