Diagnosis
The grinding noise in your GE PVM9005BLTS is typically caused by a failure in the synchronous motor's internal gear train or a sheared plastic coupling. Over time, the lubricant inside the motor housing dries out or becomes contaminated with food debris, leading to metal-on-metal friction. When you hear a "grinding" sound, it is often the internal nylon gears skipping teeth or the motor shaft slipping against the drive coupling. If the turntable stops turning intermittently, the motor has likely developed a "dead spot" or the drive gear has stripped enough that it can no longer overcome the friction of the roller ring. You can confirm this by removing the glass tray and observing the plastic D-shaped shaft. If the shaft spins but the tray doesn't move, the coupling is stripped. If the shaft vibrates violently or makes a loud mechanical screeching sound without rotating, the internal motor bearings have failed.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must replace the turntable motor assembly (Part #WB27X11014). This requires accessing the bottom of the microwave cavity.
- Safety First: Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet. Since this is an over-the-range model, you may need to drop the unit from its mounting bracket or access it from the bottom if the unit is not fully flush with the cabinetry.
- Clear the Cavity: Remove the glass turntable tray and the plastic roller guide ring. Wipe the floor of the microwave to ensure no food debris falls into the motor housing during the swap.
- Remove the Floor Plate: Locate the screws securing the bottom floor panel of the microwave cavity. Depending on the specific revision of the PVM9005BLTS, these may be hidden under small plastic caps. Remove these screws and carefully lift the floor plate to expose the motor.
- Disconnect Power: Locate the two-wire harness connecting the motor to the main control board. Squeeze the locking tab and pull the connector straight out.
- Extract the Motor: Remove the mounting screws that hold the motor bracket to the chassis. Carefully slide the motor assembly out of the cavity.
- Install New Motor: Align the new WB27X11014 motor so the drive shaft is perfectly centered. Secure the mounting screws firmly but do not over-tighten, as you could crack the chassis.
- Reassemble: Reconnect the wire harness, replace the floor plate and screws, and reinstall the roller ring and glass tray.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Roller Ring: If the noise persists, the plastic wheels on the roller guide ring may be flat-spotted or cracked. If the ring is warped, it creates uneven resistance that puts a massive load on the new motor, causing a rhythmic thumping or grinding sound. Replace the roller ring if the wheels don't spin freely.
- Check for Cavity Debris: Check the recessed "well" where the motor shaft meets the floor. If a small piece of plastic or a hardened food scrap is lodged in the center hole, it will prevent the tray from seating correctly and cause the motor to strain and noise.
- Verify Glass Tray Fit: Ensure you are using the original GE glass tray. Third-party trays often have slightly different weights or diameters; if the tray is too heavy, it will burn out the synchronous motor prematurely.
- Test the Control Board: If the motor is new but still stops intermittently, the issue may be a cold solder joint on the main control board where the motor power is routed. This is rare but can happen if the unit has suffered significant overheating.

- Avoid Overloading: Never place heavy cast-iron pots or oversized containers on the turntable; the motor is designed for standard plates and bowls. Excessive weight strips the nylon gears.
- Clean the Roller Ring: Every few months, remove the roller ring and wash it with warm soapy water. Grease and sugar buildup on the wheels increase friction and shorten motor life.
- Check Alignment: When installing the new motor, ensure the drive shaft is not tilted. A crooked shaft will cause the tray to "walk" across the microwave and create a loud rattling noise.
- High Voltage Warning: Even when unplugged, the high-voltage capacitor in the microwave can hold a lethal charge. Do not touch the capacitor or the magnetron while the unit is open.
