The leaking in a Keurig K-Duo Plus typically stems from a failure in the water delivery system, specifically where the reservoir connects to the internal pump or a breach in the overflow drainage system. Because this model handles both single-cup and carafe brewing, it has a more complex series of internal valves and hoses than standard Keurigs. If water is pooling directly under the machine, it is usually caused by a hairline crack in the reservoir base valve or a loose-fitting silicone gasket on the main water line that connects the tank to the heating element. Another common culprit is the overflow drain hose located beneath the drip tray. When the drip tray becomes saturated or if a brew overflows, water is routed through a small-diameter clear tube. If this tube becomes dislodged from its seating or develops a pinhole leak due to calcium buildup and corrosion, water will bypass the tray and leak directly onto your countertop. You can confirm this by placing a dry paper towel under the machine and running a "Carafe" brew; if the towel gets wet instantly, it's a pressurized line leak; if it happens only after the brew finishes, it's a drainage issue.
How to Fix It
To resolve the most common leakage points without fully dismantling the chassis, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the machine and unplug it from the wall outlet. Remove the water reservoir and empty any remaining water.
- Inspect the rubber O-ring seal at the bottom of the water reservoir. If you see any nicks, tears, or a buildup of white mineral scale, scrub it with a soft toothbrush and white vinegar. If the seal is cracked, it must be replaced to maintain the vacuum seal.
- Remove the removable drip tray and the plastic tray cover. Use a flashlight to look into the recessed area of the base. Locate the clear plastic overflow hose (approximately 1/4 inch in diameter) that leads from the brew head area toward the back of the machine.
- Check if the hose has slipped out of its plastic guide or is pinched. If the hose is loose, gently press it back into its retaining clip.
- Perform a "Dry Test": Place a piece of cardboard under the machine. Run a brew cycle using only water (no K-Cup). While the pump is humming, look for "spritzing" or dripping coming from the internal hoses.
- If the leak is coming from the internal connection point, use a small amount of food-grade silicone sealant on the hose connection to create a watertight seal, ensuring the hose is pushed fully onto the plastic nipple.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Descale the System: Mineral deposits can build up in the internal valves, preventing them from closing fully and causing "slow leaks" that drip during the brew. Use a commercial descaling solution or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Run the full carafe cycle twice to clear all internal blockages.
- Inspect the Reservoir Base: Examine the plastic bottom of the water tank for hairline fractures. These are often invisible until the tank is full and the weight of the water creates a microscopic gap. If you find a crack, the reservoir assembly (Part #K-Duo-Res) needs replacement.
- Check the Brew Head Gasket: If water leaks from the top and then runs down the inside of the machine to the bottom, the needle assembly gasket is worn. Open the handle, inspect the rubber ring around the K-Cup holder, and ensure no coffee grounds are trapped in the seal, which prevents a flush fit.
- Verify the Drip Tray Alignment: Ensure the drip tray is seated perfectly flush. If the tray is tilted even by a few millimeters, the overflow water will miss the internal drain and leak directly onto the counter.

- Avoid Distilled Water: Using distilled water can actually lead to sensor errors and may cause some seals to dry out faster. Use filtered water for the best balance of longevity and taste.
- Monthly Vinegar Rinse: To prevent the calcium buildup that leads to hose corrosion and leaks, run a vinegar-water cycle every 30 days.
- Avoid Overfilling: Do not fill the reservoir past the "Max" line, as this increases the hydrostatic pressure on the bottom seal, making it more prone to leaking.
- External Cleaning: Never use abrasive cleaners on the bottom of the machine; these can degrade the plastic casing and create entry points for water to seep into the electronics.
