why does my craftsman smart opener keep disconnecting from wifi and the myq app?

— asked by Casey

DIAGNOSIS Weak or inconsistent Wi-Fi signal in the garage. The 2.4GHz radio in this unit has mediocre range and is sensitive to interference from other devices or physical barriers.

FIX Improve the signal strength at the opener.

  1. Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app on your phone to check signal strength in your garage. You need at least -70 dBm for a stable connection.
  2. If signal is weak, move your router closer or install a Wi-Fi range extender in a location between the router and garage.
  3. In the MyQ app, delete the opener and re-add it after improving the signal.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The issue might be your network configuration. Ensure your router's 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks have different names (SSIDs). The opener can get confused if they share a name.

HEADS UP The opener does not support 5GHz networks or WPA3 security. Your router must broadcast a 2.4GHz network using WPA2 (AES) encryption for it to connect.
