why does my hamilton beach frontfill coffee maker brew so slow and overflow the filter basket?

— asked by Alex

Overflow is caused by grounds clogging the filter. Use less coffee, especially for decaf or flavored beans.

  • Reduce grounds. Use 3/4 tablespoon (11 ml) per cup for decaf or flavored coffee.
  • Use medium-ground coffee. Finely ground coffee clogs and overflows.
  • Clean the coffee maker monthly (weekly in hard water areas). Mineral buildup slows flow.

If using a paper filter:

  • Rinse the filter basket before inserting the paper filter so it sticks to the sides.
  • Ensure the paper filter is fully open and seated properly.
  • Check that grounds aren't between the paper filter and the basket.

Slow brewing is a clear sign the unit needs a vinegar cleaning cycle.
