This is a direct safety instruction. Unplugging eliminates any risk of fire from a potential electrical fault, especially when unattended. It also protects the unit from power surges. The warming plate may remain hot after the unit is turned off, so unplugging ensures it cools completely.
To disconnect properly: turn the control to OFF, then grasp the plug and pull it from the wall outlet. Never pull by the cord. If you need to use an extension cord temporarily, its electrical rating must be equal to or greater than the coffee maker's rating.
