- Adjust the Grind Size: Switch to a medium-coarse grind. If the coffee looks like powdered sugar or table salt, it is too fine. It should resemble sea salt or coarse sand. This allows water to flow through the basket without pooling.
- Recalibrate the Coffee-to-Water Ratio: For standard coffee, use one level tablespoon per 6 ounces of water. However, for decaf or flavored beans, reduce the amount to 3/4 tablespoon (approximately 11 ml) per cup to account for the increased swelling of these specific beans.
- Optimize Filter Placement: If using paper filters, rinse the filter basket with warm water before inserting the filter. This creates a surface tension that helps the paper adhere to the walls of the basket, preventing grounds from slipping between the paper and the plastic, which often creates a "dam" that blocks drainage.
- Perform a Deep Descale: Mix a solution of equal parts white distilled vinegar and filtered water. Fill the reservoir to the 12-cup mark. Start the brew cycle and pause it halfway through. Let the solution sit in the internal tubing for 30 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits, then resume the cycle. Run two full cycles of clean water afterward to remove any remaining vinegar scent.
If That Didn't Work
