Diagnosis
When a Mr. Coffee 5-Cup Mini Brew shows zero signs of life—no LED power indicator, no heating element activation, and no audible clicking—you are dealing with a complete break in the electrical continuity. Because this model uses a simplified single-switch circuit, the problem is almost always located at the primary power entry point or the safety thermal cutoff. The most frequent culprit is a blown thermal fuse. This is a small, one-time-use safety component designed to snap the circuit if the heating element exceeds a safe temperature threshold. If the unit was left on without enough water in the reservoir, or if there was a sudden voltage spike from the wall outlet, the fuse will blow to prevent a house fire. Once this fuse is gone, the machine is effectively "dead" because the current cannot reach the switch or the heating coil. Less commonly, the internal wiring at the base of the unit can fray due to heat cycling, or the power switch itself has suffered a mechanical failure where the internal copper contact has oxidized or snapped.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate and resolve the power failure:
- Verify the Power Source: Unplug the machine and plug in a different small appliance (like a lamp) into the same outlet. If the lamp doesn't work, reset your GFCI outlet or check your home's circuit breaker panel.
- Inspect the Power Cord: Examine the entire length of the black power cable for kinks, melted sections, or chew marks from pets. Ensure the plug is pushed firmly into the socket; these units can sometimes have loose tolerances that prevent a full connection.
- Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the unit from the wall for exactly 10 minutes. This allows any residual capacitance in the internal circuitry to discharge. Plug it back in and attempt to toggle the power switch.
- Test the Power Switch: With the unit plugged in, toggle the switch rapidly 5-10 times. If the light flickers momentarily, the internal contacts of the switch are likely carbon-scored and need cleaning or replacement.
- Check for Thermal Fuse Continuity: If you are comfortable with basic tools, unplug the unit and remove the bottom base plate screws. Locate the small silver cylinder (the thermal fuse) wrapped in heat-shrink tubing. Use a multimeter set to the "Continuity" or "Ohms" setting. Touch the probes to both ends of the fuse. If the multimeter beeps, the fuse is good; if it shows "OL" (Open Line), the fuse is blown and must be replaced with an identical part number rated for the same temperature.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Power Cord Assembly: If you have a multimeter and find no continuity from the wall plug prongs to the internal wiring terminals, the cord has a break inside the insulation. You will need to source a replacement AC power cord compatible with the 120V Mini Brew specifications.
- Clean the Switch Contacts: If the unit intermittently powers on, use a can of compressed air or electronic contact cleaner (like DeoxIT) to spray into the crevices of the power switch. Dust and coffee residue can migrate into the switch housing and block the electrical connection.
- Inspect the Heating Element Base: Look for any signs of scorching or melted plastic on the bottom of the unit. If the heating element has shorted out internally, it can trip the internal fuse immediately upon plugging it in, making it seem like the machine won't turn on. In this case, the heating element assembly is dead and cannot be repaired.
- Check for Water Intrusion: If the unit was recently overfilled or leaked from the reservoir, water may have entered the base and shorted the control board. Leave the unit upside down in a warm, dry area for 48 hours to ensure all moisture has evaporated before attempting to power it on again.

- Never Bypass the Fuse: Never "jump" or bypass the thermal fuse with a wire. This removes the only safety mechanism preventing the machine from overheating and potentially starting a fire.
- Avoid Extension Cords: These heating appliances draw significant current. Plugging a Mini Brew into a thin extension cord or a crowded power strip can cause voltage drops that may trip the internal safety components.
- Dry the Base: Always wipe the exterior bottom of the machine dry before plugging it in. Water dripping down the sides of the unit can enter the ventilation slats and cause a short circuit.
- Scale Removal: Mineral buildup in the heating tube can cause the element to work harder and run hotter, which increases the likelihood of the thermal fuse blowing. Descale your machine every 30-60 days using a white vinegar solution.
