Diagnosis
The "plastic-y" or chemical taste in your Aglucky HZB-12B ice maker is typically caused by one of two issues: off-gassing from the food-grade plastics during the first few weeks of use, or a buildup of biofilm and residual cleaning agents trapped in the internal water lines. Because this machine uses a recirculating pump system, any residue from a previous cleaning cycle—such as vinegar or dish soap—can become trapped in the narrow tubing and the reservoir's corners, leaching back into the water during every freeze cycle. To confirm the source, fill the reservoir with distilled water and run two full cycles. If the taste persists, the issue is a residue buildup in the internal plumbing or a reaction between the plastic components and your local water mineral content. If the taste disappears, the issue was likely contaminated water or a surface-level residue in the tank that requires a deeper chemical neutralize.
How to Fix It
To eliminate chemical tastes and neutralize the plastic scent, you must perform a deep-clean desorption process using a sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) solution. This neutralizes acidic residues and lifts oils from the plastic walls.
- Empty the ice basket and drain all remaining water from the reservoir. Wipe the interior of the tank with a lint-free microfiber cloth to remove any visible slime or scale.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of aluminum-free baking soda into 2 liters of warm (not boiling) distilled water. Stir until the powder is completely dissolved to avoid clogging the internal pump.
- Pour the solution into the reservoir and start the ice-making process. Allow the machine to complete 3 full cycles of ice production. Do not consume this ice; discard it immediately after each cycle.
- Drain the reservoir completely. Use a damp cloth to wipe the ice-drop chute and the sensing arms, as these areas often trap odors.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh, filtered water and run 4 consecutive "flush" cycles. This ensures all baking soda residue is purged from the internal tubing and the evaporator pins.
- Allow the machine to air dry with the lid open for 2 hours before resuming normal operation.
If That Didn't Work
- Switch to Distilled Water: If you have hard water, minerals can react with the plastic lining of the HZB-12B, creating a metallic or "chemical" taste. Using distilled water for two weeks will determine if the taste is caused by a reaction between your tap water and the machine's internals.
- Perform a Citric Acid Flush: If the taste is more "sour" or like old cleaning products, use a mixture of 1 tablespoon of food-grade citric acid per quart of water. Run two cycles to break down calcium deposits that may be trapping odors in the tubing.
- Deep Clean the Ice Basket: Often, the taste isn't in the ice itself but is absorbed from the plastic ice basket. Soak the basket in a mixture of warm water and mild detergent, scrub with a soft brush, and rinse until no soap scent remains.
- Check for External Contaminants: Ensure the machine is not placed under a cabinet where paint fumes or cleaning chemicals (like oven cleaner or bleach) are being sucked into the air intake vents, as the ice can absorb airborne odors during the freezing process.
Heads Up
- Never use bleach or harsh abrasive scrubbers inside the reservoir; this can scratch the plastic, creating microscopic grooves where bacteria and odors can permanently lodge.
- Empty and rinse the water reservoir every 48 hours, even if it is still full, to prevent the growth of biofilm which causes a "musty" taste.
- Always use filtered or distilled water to prevent scale buildup on the evaporator pins, which can lead to inefficient freezing and trapped odors.
- Avoid leaving ice in the basket for more than 24 hours; the ice will begin to absorb smells from the surrounding environment and the plastic basket itself.
