Because this model uses a compact, powerful fan to circulate heat, even a tiny fragment of dried food, a seed, or a small piece of bone can be sucked upward through the basket and lodge itself against the spinning blades. When the fan rotates at high RPMs, these foreign objects create a rapid-fire clicking sound as the blades strike the debris. Alternatively, if the sound is more of a metallic buzz or a rhythmic vibration, it indicates that the fan motor shaft has either shifted slightly off-axis or the bearing is failing. This often happens if the unit was bumped during operation or if grease buildup from high-fat foods has migrated into the motor housing, causing the fan to become unbalanced. You can confirm this by listening closely to the top of the unit; if the noise persists even when the basket is completely empty and the interior is clean, the issue is likely internal to the motor assembly rather than a loose piece of food.
How to Fix It
To resolve a clicking noise caused by debris, follow these precise steps to clear the heating chamber without damaging the heating element:
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and allow the unit to cool for at least 30 minutes to avoid burns from the heating coil.
- Remove the air fryer basket and set it aside.
- Place the unit on a stable surface and shine a high-lumen LED flashlight directly upward into the top dome of the interior cavity.
- Locate the circular fan guard. Inspect the gaps between the fan blades and the protective metal grill for any visible debris, such as charred food particles or plastic shards.
- Using a pair of long, thin needle-nose pliers or a pair of precision tweezers, carefully reach through the grill. Do not apply pressure to the heating element coils.
- Gently grasp the debris and pull it straight out. If the debris is stuck, use a can of compressed air to blow it outward from the center of the fan toward the edges of the unit.
- Manually rotate the fan blade (if reachable) with a wooden chopstick to ensure it spins freely without hitting any obstructions.
- Reinsert the basket, plug the unit in, and run a 2-minute test cycle at 350°F to verify the noise has ceased.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Housing Vibration: Ensure the unit is sitting on a completely flat, hard surface. If the Vortex Mini is on a silicone mat or a shaky countertop, the fan's vibration can resonate against the surface, creating a buzzing sound. Move the unit to a granite or wooden table to see if the noise disappears.
- Inspect the Power Cord Tension: Ensure the power cord is not pressed against the side of the unit or draped over the intake vents. In some cases, the vibration of the fan causes the cord to rattle against the outer plastic casing, mimicking a motor buzz.

- Motor Bearing Failure: If the noise is a consistent, high-pitched metallic scream or grinding, the internal bearing has likely failed. Since the motor assembly is a sealed unit in the Vortex Mini, this cannot be repaired manually and requires a replacement of the unit under warranty.

- Never use liquid cleaners or spray detergents directly into the top heating assembly, as this can short the motor or cause the heating element to spark.
- Avoid using parchment paper that is too large for the basket; if the paper flutters upward, it can be sucked into the fan, causing an immediate loud buzzing noise and potentially overheating the motor.
