Diagnosis
This issue is caused by a synchronization failure known as a "boot-sequence mismatch." When power is restored, your modem and your Google Nest WiFi Pro (6E) nodes attempt to initialize simultaneously. However, modems typically take 2 to 5 minutes to establish a handshake with the ISP and pull a public IP address. If the Nest WiFi Pro finishes its boot cycle first, it may fail to acquire a WAN IP, causing it to broadcast a "Limited Connectivity" state. Smart home devices, which often have primitive network stacks, attempt to connect the moment they see an SSID; if the router is online but the internet gateway is still closed, these devices may enter a "fail-state" or a sleep mode to conserve power, effectively giving up on the connection. Furthermore, the Nest WiFi Pro 6E utilizes a unified SSID for 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. Many legacy IoT devices (smart plugs, bulbs, and older cameras) specifically require a 2.4GHz connection. During a hard reboot, the 6GHz and 5GHz radios often initialize faster than the 2.4GHz radio. If a smart device attempts to authenticate during this window and fails, it may not retry for several minutes or may require a manual power cycle to trigger a new DHCP request. You can confirm this by checking the Google Home app; if the Nest Pro shows "Online" but your devices are "Offline," the issue is localized to the device-to-router handshake, not the ISP connection.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must execute a staged power-up sequence to ensure the network hierarchy is established correctly.
- Unplug the power cables from your modem and all three Nest WiFi Pro nodes. If you have a separate ONT (Optical Network Terminal) for fiber, unplug that as well.
- Wait exactly 60 seconds to allow the capacitors in the hardware to fully discharge.
- Plug in only the modem/ONT. Wait 3 to 5 minutes. Do not proceed until the "Online" or "Internet" LED on the modem is solid and stop blinking.
- Plug in the primary Nest WiFi Pro node (the one connected via Ethernet to the modem). Wait 2 minutes for the light ring to stabilize and for the Google Home app to report the node as "Online."
- Plug in the two secondary Nest WiFi Pro points one by one, leaving 60 seconds between each. This prevents a broadcast storm and allows the mesh backhaul to stabilize.
- Once the mesh is fully active, power cycle your smart home devices. For smart plugs, flip the wall switch off and on. For bulbs, toggle the light switch. For hubs, unplug them for 10 seconds and plug them back in.
If That Didn't Work
- Assign Static IPs: Access the Google Home app, navigate to WiFi > Settings > Advanced Networking > DHCP Reservations. Assign a fixed IP address to your most critical smart home hubs. This prevents the "IP conflict" errors that often occur after a power outage when the router tries to reassign addresses to devices that think they still hold their previous lease.
- Disable WPA3 Transition Mode: Some older 2.4GHz IoT devices cannot handle the WPA3 security protocol used by the Nest WiFi Pro 6E. If devices won't reconnect, check your security settings in the Home app. While Nest Pro defaults to a compatible mode, some devices require a full factory reset of the device itself to "forget" the old security handshake and accept the new one.
- Check for DNS Hang-ups: If devices are connected but unresponsive, the DNS may be stalled. In the Google Home app, go to WiFi settings and change your DNS from "Automatic" to "Custom." Use Google's public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) to ensure smart devices can reach their cloud servers immediately upon reboot.
- Perform a Network Restart: Instead of pulling plugs, use the "Restart Network" feature within the Google Home app. This sends a software-level command to all nodes to refresh their routing tables and clear the ARP cache, which can force stubborn IoT devices to re-authenticate.
Heads Up
- Invest in a UPS: To prevent this entirely, plug your modem and primary Nest WiFi Pro node into a small Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). This keeps the network alive during brief flickers and ensures the boot sequence is never interrupted.
- Avoid Overcrowding: The Nest Pro 6E is powerful, but having 50+ IoT devices on a single mesh can lead to DHCP exhaustion after a crash. If you have a massive smart home, consider a dedicated IoT VLAN or a separate low-cost 2.4GHz access point.
- Firmware Sync: Ensure your Google Home app is updated to the latest version. Nest Pro 6E updates are pushed automatically, but the app interface is required to manage the DHCP reservations mentioned above.
- Physical Placement: Ensure your secondary nodes are no more than two rooms away from the primary node. Power outages can sometimes cause nodes to "re-parent" to a weaker signal, leading to intermittent device drops.
