This phenomenon is known as "coil whine." It occurs when the electrical current passing through the inductors or transformers inside the Nest WiFi Pro'6E power supply or internal circuitry causes the copper coils to vibrate physically. Because these vibrations happen at a very high frequency, they manifest as a piercing, high-pitched buzzing or whining sound that is often only audible in quiet rooms or when you are standing within three feet of the device. In the Nest WiFi Pro 6E, this is typically caused by the switching power supply reacting to the fluctuating power demands of the 6GHz radio. When the unit is under heavy load—such as during a firmware update or high-bandwidth streaming—the vibration frequency changes, which is why the noise may seem to "pulse" or change pitch. You can confirm this is coil whine if the noise persists across different outlets but changes slightly in tone when you move a device (like a phone) closer to the point, altering the local RF load.
How to Fix It
While coil whine is a physical hardware characteristic and cannot be "patched" via software, you can often mitigate the audible frequency by changing how the unit interacts with your home's electrical noise.
- Isolate the Power Source: Unplug the affected Nest WiFi Pro point from the wall. Plug it into a high-quality surge protector or a power strip rather than directly into the wall outlet. This can sometimes filter out "dirty" power from the mains that exacerbates the vibration of the inductors.
- Change the Circuit: Move the noisy point to a different room on a completely separate electrical circuit. If the noise stops, the issue is likely electrical interference or a grounding loop in the original outlet rather than a defect in the hardware.
- Optimize Placement: Move the device at least 12 inches away from reflective hard surfaces like glass or polished marble. These surfaces act as acoustic amplifiers, bouncing the high-frequency sound waves back into the room and making the whine seem louder than it is.
- Load Balancing: If the noise only occurs during peak usage, try adjusting your "Preferred Activities" (Gaming or Video Conferencing) in the Google Home app settings. This can shift how the 6E radios prioritize traffic, potentially altering the power draw and silencing the whine.
If That Didn't Work
- Swap the Power Bricks: The Nest WiFi Pro 6E uses a standardized power adapter. If you have multiple points, swap the power cables between a "quiet" point and the "noisy" point. If the noise follows the cable, the issue is in the external AC adapter and not the router itself. You can then replace just the adapter rather than the whole system.
- Perform a Factory Reset: Although this is a hardware issue, a corrupted firmware state can sometimes cause the CPU to run at 100% unnecessarily, increasing power draw and coil vibration. Use the physical reset button on the bottom of the unit to wipe the settings and re-provision the point.
- Request an RMA Replacement: If the noise is loud enough to be heard from 10 feet away or is accompanied by a burning smell or excessive heat (over 110°F/43°C to the touch), the unit has a failing capacitor. Contact Google Support for a warranty replacement, specifically mentioning "audible electrical noise" to trigger a hardware exchange.
