Diagnosis
The concern about oatmeal clogging your Calphalon pressure cooker is valid. Oatmeal, especially rolled or quick oats, releases starches that foam and expand dramatically under pressure. This thick foam can be forced up into the steam release vent/valve, potentially clogging this critical safety mechanism and preventing proper pressure regulation.
How to Fix It
Do not cook plain oatmeal using the pressure function. Instead, use your cooker's alternative functions:
- Use the Sauté function to toast oats briefly, then add liquid and simmer with the lid off (not locked).
- Use the Slow Cook function (if equipped) with the lid vent open.
- For a faster, sealed-cooking method that minimizes foam, cook steel-cut oats using a pot-in-pot (PIP) method: place oats and water in a heatproof bowl on a trivet over water in the main pot. This contains the foam.
If That Didn't Work
If you require a one-pot pressure method, you can try a small quantity of steel-cut oats (which foam less than rolled oats) with a generous amount of water or milk and a tablespoon of oil or butter to reduce foaming. However, this is not recommended by manufacturers and requires careful, immediate natural pressure release and thorough cleaning of the vent afterward.
Heads Up
This prohibition extends to other high-starch, foamy foods like pasta, split peas, applesauce, and cranberries. Always ensure the steam release valve and vent are completely clean and clear before and after every use.
