The Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker operates using a basic resistive heating element located at the base of the aluminum heating tube. The machine works by boiling water in the reservoir and forcing the resulting steam and hot water up through a one-way valve, into the showerhead, and through the filter basket. Because the heating mechanism is independent of the coffee grounds, the machine is essentially a hot water boiler that happens to have a filter basket attached. To confirm the machine is suitable for this, check that your unit is clean and free of old coffee oils. If you use the machine for tea without a deep clean, the water will pick up residual "coffee taste" from the showerhead and the basket housing. The water will reach a temperature just below boiling (typically between 190°F and 205°F), which is ideal for most black teas and instant soups, though it may not reach a rolling boil required for some specific herbal infusions.
How to Fix It
To use your Mr. Coffee as a dedicated hot water dispenser, follow these precise steps to ensure purity and safety:
- Clear the Basket: Remove any old coffee grounds and the paper filter. Thoroughly rinse the removable brew basket with warm, soapy water to remove any lingering oils or sediment.
- Clean the Showerhead: Use a damp cloth to wipe the underside of the showerhead (the area where water drips into the basket). This prevents old coffee residue from contaminating your hot water.
- Fill the Reservoir: Pour filtered water into the reservoir up to the "12" line or the specific amount you need. Do not overfill past the maximum line, as this can cause the unit to leak or overflow from the top.
- The "Empty" Run: Leave the filter basket completely empty. Ensure the carafe is properly centered on the warming plate to avoid spills.
- Initiate Brewing: Press the "Brew" or "On" button. The machine will cycle the water through the system. Since there are no coffee grounds to create resistance, the water will flow faster than usual.
- Dispense: Once the cycle is complete, pour the hot water from the carafe into your tea cup or bowl.
If That Didn't Work
- Water Tastes Like Coffee: If the water has a coffee scent, you need to perform a descale. Mix a solution of 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% water. Run a full brew cycle with this mixture, then run two subsequent cycles with plain water to flush the acidity. This strips the oils from the internal aluminum tubing.
- Water Not Hot Enough: If the water is lukewarm, your heating element may be scaled with calcium. Use a commercial descaling solution or a citric acid powder mix. Fill the reservoir, run half a cycle, let it sit for 30 minutes to break down the minerals, and then finish the cycle.
- Slow Flow/Sputtering: If the water comes out in slow drips despite the basket being empty, the showerhead holes are likely clogged with mineral deposits. Use a sewing needle or a thin wire to clear the small holes in the plastic showerhead assembly.
- Carafe Not Heating: If the water cools down too quickly, ensure the "Auto-Shutoff" hasn't triggered. Some programmable models shut off after 2 hours. If you need the water to stay hot, ensure the warming plate is clean of any debris that might interfere with the thermal sensor.

- Avoid Dry Boiling: Never start a brew cycle without water in the reservoir. Running the heating element "dry" can permanently burn out the thermal fuse or warp the heating tube.
- Mineral Buildup: Using tap water leads to calcium buildup. If you live in a hard-water area, descale the machine every 30 brew cycles to maintain the water temperature.
- Carafe Safety: Be careful when pouring; the glass carafe can experience thermal shock if you add cold water to a hot pot or place a hot pot on a cold granite surface.
- Filter Basket Placement: Even when not using coffee, always keep the brew basket inserted. Removing it while brewing can cause hot water to spray unevenly or leak into the internal electronics.
