can i use my own desktop with the autonomous core frame? the one it came with is too small.

Quick answer: Yes, you can swap the desktop, but there are specific size, thickness, and weight requirements you have to hit for the frame and motors to work safely.

Diagnosis

Yes, you can swap the desktop, but there are specific size, thickness, and weight requirements you have to hit for the frame and motors to work safely.

How to Fix It

The Core frame is designed for desktops between 48 and 70 inches wide, and between 24 and 33 inches deep. The thickness is critical: it must be between 0.7 inches and 1.1 inches thick. Thinner won't hold the screws, thicker won't fit the mounting brackets. The new top must also be flat and rigid—no sagging. To mount it, you'll transfer the metal L-brackets from your old top. Carefully remove all bolts, lay the new top upside down on a soft surface, position the frame on it using the old top as a template for placement, mark the holes, pre-drill pilot holes, and bolt it back together.

If That Didn't Work

If the desk wobbles excessively or the motors strain after the swap, the most likely cause is the new desktop's weight. The total weight of the desktop PLUS everything on it must stay under the frame's capacity. A solid wood top can easily exceed this by itself. Weigh your new top. If it's too heavy, the desk will move slowly and the motors will burn out.

Heads Up

Drilling your own holes risks splitting the wood if you don't use the right drill bit and pilot holes. Also, Autonomous's warranty typically covers the frame and motors only if used with a desktop that meets their specifications. Using an incompatible top could void support for motor issues.
