Diagnosis
The leak originating from the base of the Oxo Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker typically indicates a failure in the internal fluid delivery system. Unlike a carafe overflow, which is usually caused by a clogged filter or a misplaced brew basket, a leak from the bottom means water is escaping the closed-loop system and entering the plastic housing. This is most commonly caused by a hairline crack in the silicone tubing that connects the water reservoir to the heating element, or a degraded O-ring seal at the base of the water tank. When the pump activates, it creates significant pressure to push water through the heating coil. If a hose has slipped off its barb or a seal has perished due to mineral buildup (calcification), water will spray or drip directly onto the internal electronics and the bottom chassis. You can confirm this by placing a paper towel under the machine and running a "water-only" cycle; if the towel saturates quickly without the carafe ever overflowing, the internal seal is compromised. In some cases, the leak is caused by a faulty check valve that allows water to backflow into the base during the cooling phase.
How to Fix It
Because this machine contains a high-voltage heating element and a water pump in close proximity, internal repairs should be handled with extreme caution. If the unit is under warranty, do not open the chassis, as this will void your coverage. Follow these steps to isolate and address the issue:
- Immediately unplug the unit from the wall outlet to prevent a short circuit or electrical fire, as water leaking into the base often contacts the main PCB.
- Remove the water reservoir and inspect the rubber gasket at the bottom of the tank. Look for any tears, debris, or mineral crust that may be preventing a flush seal with the machine's intake valve.
- Clean the intake valve (the small protrusion on the machine where the tank sits) using a damp cloth and a mild vinegar solution to ensure no coffee grounds or scale are blocking the seal.
- Dry the exterior and interior of the reservoir completely and reseat it firmly, ensuring you feel it "lock" into place.
- If the leak persists during a test brew, contact OXO support. Provide them with the serial number located on the bottom of the unit and specifically state that the leak is "internal/base-level" and not a "carafe overflow." This ensures they don't send you a replacement filter basket when you actually need a pump or hose replacement.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a deep descale using a commercial citric acid solution or a 50/50 white vinegar and water mix. If the leak is caused by a partial blockage in the internal lines, the increased pressure can force water out of the weakest seal. Clearing the scale may lower the internal pressure and stop the leak.
- Check the brew basket alignment. If the basket is slightly skewed, water can occasionally splash over the side of the internal drip tray and run down the inside of the housing, mimicking a base leak. Ensure the basket is centered and the lid is snapped shut.
- Inspect the power cord entry point. Occasionally, water from the reservoir can splash onto the exterior of the machine and migrate down the power cord into the base. Wipe the entire machine down and run it again to see if the "leak" is actually just external runoff.
- If the unit is out of warranty and you are comfortable with basic electronics, remove the bottom screws to inspect the silicone tubing. Check for any tubes that have slid off their connectors. If a tube has popped off, you can slide it back on and secure it with a small, heat-resistant zip tie.

- Never operate the machine if you see water pooling near the power switch or the display screen; this is a severe electrical hazard.
- Avoid using distilled water exclusively. While it prevents scale, the sensors in the Oxo Brew system often require the conductivity of filtered tap water to operate the pump and heating elements correctly.
- Descale your machine every 3 months if you have hard water. Mineral buildup is the primary cause of pressure spikes that lead to internal hose failure.
- Always ensure the carafe is perfectly centered on the warming plate; an off-center carafe can cause a backup that forces water into the internal chassis.
