The water is escaping the closed loop after it leaves the reservoir but before it reaches the heating element or the showerhead, pooling in the bottom chassis and exiting through the vent gaps in the plastic housing. This is most commonly caused by a hairline fracture in the plastic water reservoir tank, often occurring at the bottom seam where the plastic is molded. Alternatively, the silicone O-ring/gasket that seals the tank to the machine's intake valve has perished or shifted, allowing water to seep around the connection point. If the leak occurs mid-brew, it may be a loose internal silicone hose that has slipped off the heating tube due to repeated thermal expansion and contraction, causing water to spray directly into the base of the unit.
How to Fix It
To resolve this leak, follow these precise steps to isolate and repair the breach:
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet and allow it to cool completely to avoid burns from the heating element.
- Remove the 12-cup water reservoir. Inspect the bottom of the clear plastic tank for "spider-web" cracks or a visible split along the molded seam. If a crack is found, the reservoir must be replaced as food-grade sealant is not recommended for this high-heat area.
- Locate the black silicone gasket seated in the intake port of the machine where the reservoir connects. Use a cotton swab to clear any coffee grounds or mineral buildup from the seal. If the gasket is flattened, cracked, or missing, it will not create a vacuum seal, leading to bottom leaks.
- Check the reservoir's output nozzle for any obstructions or warping. Ensure the nozzle seats fully into the machine's intake valve with a firm "click" or flush fit.
- Perform a "Dry Test": Fill the reservoir with a small amount of water and hold it in place without starting a brew. If water drips immediately, the seal is the culprit. If it only leaks when the pump/heater activates, the issue is an internal hose.
- If you are comfortable opening the chassis, remove the base screws and inspect the clear silicone tubing connecting the intake valve to the heating boiler. Ensure the hose clamps are tight and the tubing is not pinched or melted against the heating element.
If That Didn't Work

If the carafe is slightly off-center, the "Pause and Serve" drip-stop valve may not engage fully, causing coffee to overflow the brew basket and run down the internal walls of the machine, appearing as a leak from the bottom.
- Inspect the Brew Basket Gasket: Remove the filter basket and check the seal where the basket meets the machine. If the basket is warped or the gasket is worn, water can bypass the carafe and leak directly into the machine's interior housing.
- Replace the Reservoir Assembly: If hairline cracks are invisible to the eye but water still escapes, the plastic has likely become porous due to heat stress. Replacing the reservoir tank is the only permanent fix for structural plastic failure.
