The color shift you are experiencing—specifically the "purple blues" and "green skin tones"—is a classic symptom of a color registration and density mismatch. When you replace all four toner cartridges (CMYK) simultaneously, the printer's internal density maps are reset. Because every toner batch has slight variations in chemical composition and powder flow, the printer is currently applying "generic" color values that don't align with the actual output of the new cartridges. Furthermore, this specific shift often indicates a misalignment of the transfer belt or the drum units. If the Cyan layer is slightly offset from the Magenta, the overlapping areas create a purple hue instead of a crisp blue. The green skin tones occur because the printer is over-compensating with Yellow and Cyan while under-applying Magenta to balance the image. You can confirm this by printing a "Printer Settings" report; if the color bars show overlapping edges or inconsistent saturation across the page, the machine requires a full hardware recalibration to sync the new toner densities with the existing drum wear levels.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a full hardware-level calibration and a density adjustment. Follow these exact steps on the printer's control panel:
- Load at least 10 sheets of standard 20lb plain white multipurpose paper into Tray 1. Do not use photo paper or heavy cardstock, as the sensors cannot accurately read the reflection.
- Press the Menu button on the physical control panel.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll down to Printer and press OK.
- Scroll down to Color Calibration and press OK.
- Select Calibration and then choose Start.
- The printer will now print a series of color patches. Crucial: Do not touch the printer or open any trays while this is happening. The machine uses an internal sensor to analyze the output of the new toners.
- Once the print cycle finishes, the screen will display "Calibration Complete."
- Restart the printer by powering it off completely, waiting 10 seconds, and powering it back on to commit the new color profiles to the NVRAM.
If That Didn't Work
- Verify Drum Unit Seating: Open the front cover and pull out the drum unit and toner assembly. Ensure that the Cyan toner is in the Cyan slot and Magenta is in the Magenta slot. A common mistake is swapping these two, which causes a total inversion of color profiles. Ensure the green locking levers are snapped firmly into place.
- Perform a Drum Cleaning: If the colors are still skewed, a "corona wire" contamination may be causing uneven charge. Slide the green tab on each of the four drum units from left to right and back again three times. This clears toner dust from the wire that can cause color streaks or shifts.
- Check Driver Color Settings: On your PC, go to Printing Preferences > Advanced tab. Ensure the "Color Mode" is set to "Auto" and not "Vivid" or "Custom." A custom ICC profile from a previous printer model can force the HL-L3280CDW to output incorrect hues regardless of the hardware calibration.
- Replace the Transfer Belt: If the purple/green shift persists and appears as a "ghosting" effect, the transfer belt (the large black film) may be worn or contaminated. Check for any visible streaks or scratches on the belt surface. If the belt is damaged, the toner will not transfer evenly from the drums to the paper, distorting the colors.

- Always perform a calibration cycle immediately after replacing more than two toner cartridges to prevent color drift.
- Avoid using "compatible" or "third-party" toners if color accuracy is critical for your work; these often have different pigment densities than Brother OEM cartridges, making calibration difficult.
- Keep the printer in a temperature-controlled environment. Extreme humidity or heat can affect the viscosity of the toner powder, leading to the exact color shifts you are seeing.
- Never touch the green rollers on the drum units with your fingers, as skin oils create "voids" in the print that the calibration tool will mistake for a lack of toner density.
