Diagnosis

This specific issue is known as "ghosting" or "repetitive defects." In the Brother HL-L3280CDW, this occurs when toner is not permanently bonded to the paper during the fusing process. Instead of melting into the fibers, a small amount of toner remains adhered to the surface of the fuser roller. As the roller completes a full 360-degree rotation, that leftover toner is pressed back onto the page at the exact same relative position, creating a repeating smudge or a faint image of the text from higher up the page. The 3-inch interval is the tell-tale sign; it corresponds precisely to the circumference of the heat fuser roller. This is typically caused by either a physical nick in the roller's Teflon coating, a buildup of "toner crust" from using non-OEM cartridges, or a failure in the heating element that prevents the roller from reaching the required temperature to melt the toner. You can confirm this by printing a "Printer Settings" page; if the smudge appears at identical intervals regardless of the content, the fuser hardware is the culprit.

How to Fix It

Because the fuser is a heat-sealed mechanical assembly, cleaning it is rarely a permanent fix. The most reliable solution is replacing the fuser unit (Part No: FM-350).

1. Power down the printer completely and unplug the AC power cord from the wall. This is critical as the fuser reaches temperatures exceeding 200°C and can cause severe burns.
2. Wait at least 30 minutes for the internal components to cool to a safe touching temperature.
3. Open the rear access door by pulling the two tabs on the back of the machine.
4. Locate the green release levers/handles on the sides of the fuser assembly. Lift these levers upward to unlock the unit from the chassis.
5. Gently slide the old fuser assembly straight out of the rear of the printer. Be careful not to touch the orange-colored rollers of the new unit with your bare fingers, as skin oils can cause spotting.
6. Slide the new FM-350 fuser unit into the slot until it seats firmly.
7. Lower the green levers to lock the assembly into place and close the rear cover.
8. Plug the printer back in and run 5-10 blank pages to ensure the rollers are seated and any factory residue is cleared.

If That Didn't Work

• Inspect the Drum Units: If the smudge persists, the issue may be a damaged OPC (Organic Photo Conductor) drum. Check the drum for a physical scratch or a speck of fused toner. If you see a mark on the roller that matches the 3-inch spacing, replace the corresponding color drum unit.
• Adjust Paper Settings: If the ghosting is faint, the fuser may be working but not at the correct temperature for your paper weight. Go to Settings > General Setup > Paper Settings and change the "Paper Type" from "Plain Paper" to "Thicker" or "Bond." This forces the fuser to slow down the page speed, giving the heat more time to bond the toner.
• Verify Toner Quality: Third-party "compatible" toners often have a higher melting point than Brother OEM toner. If you recently installed a non-genuine cartridge, the toner may simply be refusing to melt. Swap back to a genuine Brother TN-series cartridge to see if the ghosting disappears.
• Clean the Transfer Belt: Open the front cover and inspect the black transfer belt for any adhered clumps of toner. Use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth to gently wipe the belt. If the belt has a permanent "divot" or tear, it can cause repeating marks that mimic fuser ghosting.

• Never use rubbing alcohol or chemical solvents on the fuser rollers; this can strip the non-stick coating and cause permanent page jamming.
• Avoid using "heavy" cardstock that exceeds the printer's rated GSM, as this can put excessive pressure on the fuser rollers and cause them to flatten or "flat-spot."
• Always ensure the rear cover is snapped shut completely; if the door is slightly open, the fuser cannot maintain a consistent temperature, leading to uneven fusing.
• Keep the printer in a well-ventilated area. If the chassis overheats, the internal thermal sensors may throttle the fuser temperature, resulting in "cold" spots and ghosting.
