cooling keeps short cycling, turns on for like 3 minutes then off for 2, over and over. it never reaches the set temp

DIAGNOSIS The thermostat's default minimum cycle time is too short for your system, or the temperature differential (swing) setting is too narrow.

FIX Adjust the cycle rate settings. Go to thermostat settings > installation > equipment > advanced settings. Set "Minimum Compressor On Time" to 5 minutes. Set "Minimum Compressor Off Time" to 5 minutes. This prevents rapid on/off cycling.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Widen the temperature differential. In the same advanced menu, change "Temperature Differential" from the default 0.5°F to 1.0°F or 1.5°F. This increases the range the temperature must drift before the system restarts.

HEADS UP Short cycling can also indicate an oversized AC unit or a refrigerant issue. These settings help protect the equipment but do not address underlying mechanical problems.
