The loud grinding noise occurring specifically during the "harvest" phase—the moment the machine attempts to push the frozen ice cubes off the evaporator pins—is typically caused by mechanical resistance. In the Della Portable Ice Maker, this is most often due to calcium and magnesium mineral deposits (limescale) accumulating on the evaporator plate and the plastic auger arm. When these minerals crystallize, they create a gritty, sandpaper-like surface that increases friction. As the motor engages to rotate the auger and push the ice, the motor struggles to overcome this friction, resulting in a harsh grinding or straining sound. In some cases, this is exacerbated by "ice bridging," where a stray piece of ice freezes to the side wall or the auger itself, causing the mechanism to jam. If you see white, chalky residue on the metal pins or the plastic arm, you have a confirmed scale buildup problem. If the noise is accompanied by "half-formed" cubes that refuse to drop, the motor is likely slipping because the resistance is too high.
How to Fix It
To resolve the grinding noise, you must perform a deep chemical descale to dissolve the mineral bonds. Follow these precise steps:
- Empty the ice basket and drain all remaining water from the reservoir using the drain plug located at the bottom rear of the unit.
- Mix a solution of 50% distilled white vinegar and 50% warm filtered water. Fill the reservoir to the "MAX" line with this mixture.
- Plug the machine in and initiate a standard ice-making cycle. Let the machine run for 2-3 full harvest cycles. This allows the acidic solution to circulate over the evaporator pins and soak into the auger mechanism.
- Once the cycles are complete, turn the machine off and let the vinegar solution sit inside the evaporator area for at least 60 minutes. This "soak phase" is critical for breaking down hardened calcium deposits that a simple rinse won't touch.
- Drain the vinegar solution completely.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh, clean water and run 3 consecutive full cycles to flush out all residual vinegar and loosened mineral flakes.
- Wipe down the interior walls and the ice basket with a damp, lint-free cloth to ensure no residue remains.
If That Didn't Work
- Manual Debris Removal: Unplug the unit and use a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in warm water to gently scrub the evaporator pins and the plastic auger arm. Look for any small pieces of plastic or foreign debris that may have become lodged in the gear track, which can cause a rhythmic grinding sound.
- Leveling Adjustment: Place a bubble level on top of the machine. If the unit is tilted forward or to the side, the auger arm may be rubbing against the side of the evaporator housing. Adjust the placement or use a shim to ensure the machine is perfectly level, reducing lateral friction on the motor.
- Sensor Cleaning: Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the ice-level sensor (the infrared beam) located near the top of the chamber. If the sensor is dirty, the machine may attempt to harvest ice when the basket is already full, causing the auger to grind against a wall of ice.
- Motor Gear Lubrication: If the noise persists and sounds "metallic," the internal drive gear may be dry. While the motor is sealed, ensuring the unit is not kept in an overly cold environment (below 50°F/10°C) prevents the internal lubricants from thickening, which can cause the motor to strain.
