This creates a high-friction environment where the paper skews slightly, hitting the side walls of the duplex tray and triggering the sensor. You can confirm this is a duplex-specific failure if the printer handles single-sided prints perfectly but consistently throws a "Jam Rear" or "Duplex Jam" error the moment the page is pulled back into the machine. If you open the rear cover and find the paper neatly folded or crumpled exactly at the reversal point, the issue is likely a degraded pickup roller or a contaminated path rather than a mechanical gear failure.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep clean of the duplex reversal mechanism and the paper path. Follow these steps precisely:
- Power off the printer and unplug the power cord from the wall to avoid electrical shock and to prevent the fuser from burning you.
- Open the rear access door by pulling the two levers located on the back of the chassis. This exposes the duplexing unit and the exit rollers.
- Locate the two small rubber rollers (the duplex reversal rollers) that pull the paper back into the machine. If they appear glossy or grey, they have "glazed" over and lost their grip.
- Dampen a lint-free microfiber cloth with a small amount of distilled water or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the circumference of these rollers, rotating them manually to clean the entire surface.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow out the "paper dust" that accumulates in the crevices of the green plastic guides. Focus specifically on the sensor flags—the small plastic levers that detect paper movement—to ensure they move freely.
- Inspect the duplex tray for any tiny fragments of torn paper. Even a piece the size of a fingernail lodged in the corner can cause a skew that leads to a jam.
- Close the rear cover firmly until it clicks. Reconnect the power and run a "Test Print" with 2-sided printing enabled to verify the fix.
If That Didn't Work
- Check Paper Weight and Settings: Ensure you are using standard 20lb (75gsm) office paper. If you are using heavier cardstock or "Premium" inkjet paper, the DCP-L2640DW's duplexer cannot handle the stiffness, causing the paper to buckle. Change the paper type in the printer driver settings to "Recycled" or "Thick" to adjust the roller timing.

- Never use oil, WD-40, or grease on the rubber rollers; this will permanently destroy the friction coefficient and make the printer unable to grip paper.
