ecobee premium keeps losing wifi connection every few hours, have to keep reconnecting it

— asked by Riley

DIAGNOSIS Unstable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal. The Premium is fussier about signal strength than older models, and dual-band networks or certain router settings can cause frequent drops.

FIX Improve the 2.4GHz signal strength.

  • In the Ecobee app, go to Settings > Wi-Fi. Forget your network.
  • On your router, temporarily split your 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks into two separate SSIDs with different names.
  • Reconnect the Ecobee to the 2.4GHz network ONLY.
  • Ensure the thermostat is not installed on an interior wall with metal studs directly between it and the router.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Router compatibility issue. Disable WPA3 security on your router's 2.4GHz band and use WPA2-PSK (AES) only. Also disable any 'Smart Connect' or band-steering features.

HEADS UP The built-in SmartSensor uses a different radio and will keep working for occupancy/room temp even if the thermostat's Wi-Fi is down. Your schedule and remote control just won't function.
