ego chainsaw cs1800e chain keeps coming loose while i'm cutting, how do i tighten it right?

— asked by Chad

Yeah, that's a tension issue, and it's dangerous. You need to adjust it properly using the tool's built-in system. Here's how.

  1. First, push the chain kickback brake handle forward to the brake position. This locks the chain for safety.
  2. Place the saw on its side with the side cover facing up.
  3. Turn the quick chain-tension adjust knob clockwise to tighten. You don't need any other tools.
  4. The chain should be snug against the guide bar but still pull freely by hand. If it's binding, you've gone too far.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The chain might be worn out or installed backwards. Check the small directional arrows engraved on the saw chain and power head. They must point in the same direction when the chain is looped on. An old, stretched chain won't hold tension and needs replacing.

HEADS UP: Always check chain tension before every use. A loose chain can derail or break, and that's a serious kickback hazard.
