Diagnosis
The issue where the motor engages but the wheels spin freely—or fail to move the chassis—is typically caused by a mechanical disconnect in the drive train. Most commonly, a build-up of thick grass, twine, or organic debris has jammed the drive shaft or axle, preventing the gears from gripping the wheels. In some cases, the self-propel bail (the lever) may be worn or improperly seated, meaning the electronic signal is sent but the physical engagement isn't happening.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to clear the drive system and restore traction:
- Power Down: Remove the battery pack immediately to prevent accidental startup.
- Position the Mower: Tip the mower onto its side. Ensure you tip it so the battery compartment is facing UP to avoid damaging the electronics or leaking fluids.
- Clear the Axles: Inspect the area around the rear wheels and the drive shaft. Look for "bird-nesting" (wrapped grass or string) around the axle. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a utility knife to carefully cut away and remove all debris.
- Test the Bail: Ensure the self-propel lever is not bent or obstructed. Press it firmly to ensure it is making full contact with the internal switch.
- Reassemble and Test: Reinsert the battery and test the propel function on a flat, hard surface first to verify the wheels are gripping.
If That Didn't Work
If the drive wheels still spin freely despite being clear of debris, the internal drive gear or the transmission belt may have snapped or slipped. Because the LM2135SP uses a sealed gear system, this cannot be repaired in the field. You will need to contact an authorized service center to have the transmission assembly inspected or replaced under warranty.
Heads Up
Never use a high-pressure hose to "blast out" the drive shaft area, as this can force water into the sealed bearings or electronic controllers, leading to permanent corrosion and motor failure.
