Diagnosis
This sudden loss of power on a Greenworks 40V 21-Inch mower is typically caused by a "hard trip" of the internal circuit protection or a failure in the safety interlock chain. When the mower stops instantly without a fade in motor speed or a warning beep, it usually indicates that the electrical circuit has been physically broken or the Battery Management System (BMS) has triggered a shutdown to prevent cell damage. This often happens if the blade hits a thick patch of wet grass or a hidden debris object, causing an instantaneous current spike that trips the electronic fuse. Another common culprit is the safety bail (the lever you hold against the handle). Inside the handle assembly, there is a micro-switch or a spring-loaded contact. If the plastic housing has warped from sun exposure or if the spring has lost tension, the switch can "float," meaning it loses contact even while you are holding the lever down. You can confirm this by checking the battery LED indicator; if the battery shows full charge but the motor is silent, the issue is likely the safety interlock or a blown internal fuse rather than a depleted cell.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to reset the system and verify the mechanical connections:
- Perform a Hard Power Reset: Remove the 40V battery completely from the mower. Press and hold the safety bail (the handle lever) down for 15 seconds while the battery is removed. This drains any residual capacitance in the controller. Reinsert the battery firmly until you hear a distinct click.
- Inspect the Safety Bail Tension: Ensure the safety lever is pulling the internal switch fully. If the lever feels "loose," check for debris or grass clippings jammed in the pivot point of the handle. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the gap between the lever and the main handle bar.
- Check the Battery Contact Pins: Inspect the gold-plated terminals on both the battery and the mower's docking port. If there is grass buildup or oxidation, use a cotton swab with 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts. A poor connection can cause the BMS to shut down the power flow to prevent arching.
- Clear the Blade Deck: Tilt the mower on its side (always with the battery removed) and check for a "bird's nest" of grass wrapped around the motor shaft or jammed against the blade. If the motor detects too much resistance during startup, it will shut down instantly to prevent the motor from burning out.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a Secondary Battery: If you have a second 40V battery, swap them. A battery can show a "full" light on the exterior but have a failed internal cell that collapses under the high-amp load of the motor, causing an immediate shutdown. If the second battery works, the first battery has a failed cell and must be replaced.
- Inspect the Safety Switch Wiring: If you are comfortable removing the plastic handle shrouds, check the wiring leading from the safety bail to the control board. These wires are prone to pinching or fraying if the handle has been folded and unfolded frequently. Look for any exposed copper or severed wires.
- Check for Thermal Shutdown: If the mower was used in temperatures above 90°F (32°C) or in very tall, thick grass, the thermal protector may have tripped. Let the mower sit in the shade for 30-60 minutes. If it restarts after cooling, you are likely overloading the motor by attempting to cut too much grass in one pass.
- Verify the Blade Condition: A severely bent or unbalanced blade can cause the motor to draw excessive current, triggering the electronic protection. Remove the blade bolt and ensure the blade is straight and not excessively worn.

- Battery Storage: Never store your 40V batteries in a freezing garage or a boiling shed; extreme temperatures degrade the lithium cells and lead to premature BMS failures.
- Mowing Technique: To avoid tripping the circuit breaker, raise the cutting height by one notch when mowing overgrown grass or "wet" lawns to reduce the load on the motor.
- Cleaning: Always clean the underside of the deck after every use. Dried grass buildup creates drag on the blade, which increases amp draw and leads to more frequent sudden shutdowns.
- Safety First: Never attempt to clear debris from the blade or inspect the motor without first removing the battery. The mower can engage unexpectedly if the safety switch is bypassed or malfunctioning.
