Diagnosis
This is almost certainly not a hardware defect or a "dud" unit, but rather a common issue with the ink delivery system in the ET-2800. Because this model uses a continuous ink supply system (CISS), the ink must travel through long plastic tubes from the tanks to the printhead. If the printer sits idle for more than a week, air bubbles can form in these lines, or the ink can dehydrate and solidify within the microscopic nozzles of the printhead. When you see faint lines or "banding," it means some nozzles are firing while others are blocked. This creates a gap in the ink deposition on the paper. You can confirm this by printing a "Nozzle Check" pattern. If the grid of lines has gaps or missing segments, the printhead is clogged. If the page is completely blank despite full tanks, you likely have an "air lock" in the ink lines, preventing the ink from reaching the head entirely.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must force the printer to purge the air and clear the dried ink using the internal maintenance tools. Follow these exact steps:
- Load a stack of plain A4 or Letter paper into the rear feed.
- On the printer's physical control panel, press the Home button.
- Use the arrow keys to navigate to Setup and press OK.
- Scroll down to Maintenance and press OK.
- Select Nozzle Check first. Print the page. If the lines are broken, proceed to the next step.
- Select Print Head Cleaning and press OK. The printer will begin a series of pumping cycles that last about 2-3 minutes.
- Once the cleaning is complete, print another Nozzle Check.
- If the quality hasn't improved, repeat the cleaning process up to three times. Crucial: Wait 6 hours between the third and fourth cleaning attempt to allow the ink to naturally soften the dried clogs.
- If the problem persists after the wait period, navigate back to Maintenance and select Power Cleaning. Warning: This process consumes a significant amount of ink and requires the ink tanks to be at least one-third full.
If That Didn't Work
- Manual Air Purge: If you see large gaps of air in the ink tubes (visible by opening the scanner unit), a software cleaning may not be enough. You can use a syringe (without the needle) to gently pull ink from the dampers directly above the printhead, though this requires removing the printhead carriage screws and is for advanced users only.
- Printhead Solvent Soak: If the nozzles are severely dried, dampen a lint-free cloth with a specialized printhead cleaning solution or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Fold the cloth into a strip and carefully slide it under the printhead carriage, letting the head sit on the damp cloth for 2 hours to dissolve the ink crust.
- Driver Settings Adjustment: Sometimes the "faint" look is actually a software setting. Go to your computer's Printing Preferences, select the More Options tab, and change the Paper Type to "Premium Presentation Paper Matte" and Quality to "High." This forces the printer to use more ink per pass.
- Firmware Update: Ensure your ET-2800 is on the latest firmware version via the Epson Software Updater on your PC. Some early versions of the ET-2800 had ink-flow logic bugs that were patched in later updates.
Heads Up
- The Weekly Rule: To prevent this from happening again, print at least one full-color page every 7 days. This keeps the ink moving and prevents air bubbles from forming in the lines.
- Avoid Generic Ink: Using third-party "compatible" inks in the ET-2800 often leads to faster clogging because the pigment particle size is inconsistent with the nozzle diameter.
- Power Cleaning Limit: Do not run the "Power Cleaning" utility more than twice in a single month. It puts significant wear on the waste ink pads, which will eventually trigger a "Service Required" error that locks the printer.
- Keep it Covered: If you live in a very dry or dusty environment, keep the printer in a room with a humidifier or cover it with a cloth when not in use to prevent the open-air components of the printhead from drying out.
