When the motor spins but the sensor at the entrance of the print head doesn't detect a sheet of paper moving forward within a specific timeframe, the firmware triggers the "out of paper" alert. Another common cause is a misalignment of the edge guides. If the side guides are too loose, the paper feeds at a slight angle, causing the sheet to snag or fail to trigger the internal photo-interrupter sensor. In some cases, a small piece of torn paper or a foreign object (like a staple or paperclip) may be lodged in the rear feed slot, physically blocking the paper from advancing even if the rollers are spinning perfectly. You can confirm this by listening: if you hear the rollers spinning rapidly but the paper doesn't budge, it is a traction issue; if you hear a grinding noise or a sudden stop, it is a physical jam.

How to Fix It

1. Remove the entire stack of paper from the rear input tray. Do not leave any sheets inside.
2. Fan the paper stack thoroughly to break the static bond between sheets. Flex the stack in opposite directions to ensure no two pages are stuck together.
3. Clean the pickup roller manually. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water (do not use rubbing alcohol as it can dry out the rubber). Reach into the rear feed slot and gently wipe the rubber roller while rotating it manually if possible.
4. Insert the paper stack back into the tray. Ensure the paper is pushed firmly against the back of the tray but not forced.
5. Slide the side edge guides snugly against the paper. There should be no gap between the guide and the paper, but do not press so hard that the paper bows or curves, as this will cause a misfeed.
6. Ensure you are using standard 20lb bond paper. If using heavier cardstock, limit the stack to 5-10 sheets to ensure the roller has enough downward pressure to grip the top page.
7. Power cycle the printer by turning it off, waiting 30 seconds, and turning it back on to reset the sensor logic.

If That Didn't Work

• Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the power cord from the back of the ET-2800 while the unit is still powered on. Wait 60 seconds. This clears the temporary volatile memory and resets the paper feed timing sensors which may have glitched.
