Diagnosis
The Hamilton Beach EM031MZC-X1 does not feature an internal CMOS battery or non-volatile memory for its clock circuit. Most countertop microwaves are designed this way to reduce cost and complexity; since the clock is a secondary feature, the device does not store time settings when the electrical current is interrupted. When power is lost, the capacitor holding the clock's memory discharges, resulting in a reset to the default factory time (usually 12:00) and a blinking display upon restoration.
How to Fix It
Because this is a hardware design limitation rather than a malfunction, there is no setting or switch to "lock" the time. You must manually reset the clock after every power outage:
- Press the Clock button on the control panel.
- Use the number pad to enter the current time (Hour, Minute).
- Press the Clock button again or press Start to confirm and lock in the time.
If That Didn't Work
If you find your clock is resetting frequently even without a total power outage, you may be experiencing "brownouts" or voltage sags.
- Ensure the microwave is plugged directly into a grounded wall outlet rather than an extension cord or power strip, as voltage drops can trigger a reset.
- If you live in an area with unstable power, a high-capacity Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) could theoretically keep the clock running, but be warned: most consumer UPS units cannot handle the massive wattage draw of a microwave during actual cooking and may blow a fuse or shut down.
Heads Up
A blinking clock does not disable the microwave's heating capabilities. You can still use the "Quick Start" or "30 Second" buttons to cook food even if the clock has not yet been reset.
