Diagnosis
The interior of your Hamilton Beach EM031MZC-X1 microwave has a non-stick coated or stainless steel surface. This coating is durable for cooking but is susceptible to scratches from abrasive materials, which can trap grime and compromise the finish.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the microwave for safety.
- Create a cleaning solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Dampen a soft, non-abrasive cloth (microfiber is ideal) in the solution, wringing it out well so it's not dripping.
- Thoroughly wipe the interior walls, ceiling, turntable, and door. For the turntable, you can remove it and wash it in the sink.
- Use a separate damp cloth with clean water to rinse away any soap residue.
- Dry all surfaces with a clean, dry cloth.
- For stuck-on food or odors, use the steam method: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar. Microwave on High for 3-5 minutes until the window is steamy. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then wipe the loosened grime with your damp cloth.
If That Didn't Work
For persistent, baked-on grease or stains, use a dedicated, non-abrasive microwave cleaner or a paste made from baking soda and water. Apply the cleaner or paste with a soft sponge or cloth, let it sit for a few minutes to soften the residue, then gently wipe clean. Avoid scrubbing in a circular motion; use light, linear strokes. For the glass turntable, you can use a plastic scraper or a dampened dryer sheet to gently lift stubborn spots.

Never use steel wool, scrub pads, abrasive powders (like baking soda directly on a dry surface), bleach, or oven cleaners, as they will permanently damage the interior coating. Avoid spraying liquid directly into the microwave cavity; apply it to your cloth instead. Be careful not to let moisture seep into the vent openings on the top or sides of the interior, or around the control panel.
