Diagnosis
The grinding or rattling noise in your Char-Griller Gravity Fed 980 fan is typically caused by one of two things: particulate infiltration or bearing failure. Because this grill uses a gravity-fed system, ash is constantly being pulled toward the bottom of the hopper. Fine ash particles can migrate into the fan housing and lodge themselves between the impeller blades and the outer casing, or worse, penetrate the motor's shaft seals. When this happens, the friction creates a high-pitched grinding sound or a rhythmic rattling as the blade strikes a piece of debris. Alternatively, if the noise is a deep, metallic drone, the internal lubricated bearings of the DC motor have likely worn down or become contaminated. Once the lubricant dries out or is replaced by abrasive ash, the shaft begins to wobble (axial play), causing the fan blade to hit the sides of the plastic housing at high RPMs. You can confirm this by unplugging the unit and spinning the fan blade manually with a screwdriver; if you feel "grit" or notice the blade wobbles side-to-side, the motor is failing.
How to Fix It
To resolve the noise and prevent a total motor burnout, follow these precise steps to clean and calibrate the assembly:
- Disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet immediately to prevent accidental activation.
- Locate the fan assembly at the base of the gravity hopper. Use a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws securing the fan shroud/cover to the grill chassis.
- Carefully slide the fan housing away from the air intake. Be mindful of the wiring harness connecting the fan to the digital controller.
- Use a can of compressed air or a vacuum with a brush attachment to thoroughly clear all ash and carbon buildup from the impeller blades and the interior walls of the housing.
- Inspect the fan blade for any warped plastic or cracks. If the blade is bent, it will create an imbalance that leads to the rattling noise.
- Apply a single drop of high-temperature synthetic lubricant (such as a silicone-based oil) to the center shaft where it enters the motor housing. Do not use WD-40, as it is a degreaser and will strip the remaining factory lubricant.
- Manually rotate the blade 360 degrees several times to ensure it spins freely without any audible clicking or resistance.
- Reinstall the shroud, tightening the screws firmly but not over-torquing them, as the plastic housing can crack under excessive pressure.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Fan Assembly: If the grinding persists after cleaning, the internal bearings are shot. You will need to replace the entire fan motor assembly (Part #CG-980-FAN). This involves disconnecting the wiring harness from the control board and swapping the entire motor unit.
- Check for Housing Warpage: If the grill has been subjected to extreme heat (e.g., running the fan at 100% for 12+ hours), the plastic housing may have warped. Check the gap between the blade and the wall using a feeler gauge or a thin piece of cardboard; if the gap is uneven, you may need to carefully trim the plastic housing with a utility knife to provide clearance.
- Inspect the Controller Voltage: If the fan sounds like it is "struggling" or humming rather than grinding, the digital controller may be sending inconsistent voltage to the motor. Test the fan with a compatible 12V DC power source to see if the noise persists outside of the grill's circuitry.

- Ash Management: Always empty the ash tray and vacuum the bottom of the hopper before every second cook. Ash buildup is the primary killer of these fans.
- Avoid Over-Lubrication: Never spray lubricant directly onto the fan blades; this attracts more ash and dust, creating a "sludge" that will seize the motor faster than dry ash would.
- Power Cycling: If the fan begins to make noise during a cook, do not leave it running at maximum speed. Lower the fan setting to reduce the RPMs and vibration until you can perform a full cleaning.
- Seal Integrity: Check the gasket around the fan housing. If the seal is leaking, it allows more oxygen to bypass the fan, forcing the motor to work harder and run hotter to maintain target temperatures.
